How to Save Money at Vet ER

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We brought in our extremely sick puppy, Harlow, during our Thanksgiving weekend. The veterinarians immediately took action to care for her. They laid out a treatment plan and provided us with an upfront estimate of the costs. Their communication, integrity, and support were outstanding. The administrative staff was very kind and patient. Thanks to their care, our puppy is now doing amazingly well! We are incredibly grateful for their commitment to helping her recover. They are the BEST 24-hour vet in the city.

Our first & hopefully only emergency visit needed last night for our fur baby Dyson was absolutely the most positive, caring experience given the circumstances of the visit. The compassion & knowledge of the staff created a positive, comforting outcome for our little guy who we thought we may not have much time left to love and share with him❤️

I had taken my dog Lu here twice, once in June 2023 and in June 2024. In 2023, Lu unfortunately got bit by another dog, and I brought her to Vet ER. My experience was excellent. From the front staff to the veterinarian, everything went smoothly. The vet walked me through the options, and we were able to take care of Lu with equal care for the least cost. In early June 2024, Lu had what we now know was a syncope (fainting) episode due to her heart. We saw Dr. Abbott and a significant heart murmur was noted. She diagnosed Lu with heart disease, and we did some x-rays to help decide which medication would be best to start Lu on. Lu was extremely anxious throughout the visit but was calm with Dr. Abbott. The entirety of the experience, from walking in to leaving the clinic, was seamless. The staff were very compassionate, helpful, and professional. They even ensured all results and receipts were e-mailed to me and forwarded to Lu's regular vet clinic for follow-up. Unfortunately, we did have to say goodbye to Lu on July 6, but I will forever be grateful for the care and attention she and I received at our two visits. I cannot recommend this clinic enough.

Ive come here for years. Luna always had atleast 1 vet visit a year. Sometimes they are busy and the wait is pretty long, but they always do their best. They had her for 36 hours before i brought her home. A couple days later and she still wasnt improving. We called serenity vet and a lovely lady came and helped us put her to sleep. They did everything they could. Thank you for your years of helping me with her.

Best ER vet care! I took my cat here last night and was beyond impressed with how caring the staff were and remained for the four hours I was there. The facility is spotless, with various spaces to wait with your pet (I especially appreciated the coffee selection). The front admin was delightful. The vet tech was so loving and knowledgeable. She was very thorough with expectations of treatment. The vet was very nice and patient and gave me space to relay the information I had about my cat. The pricing was incredibly reasonable. There was signage throughout with the fee for the initial exam ($180) and also how they prioritize animals coming in for care, which I found helpful. It was also nice to see people feeling safe to bring in wild birds that were in distress. Could not recommend enough.
