How to Save Money at Harvest Pointe Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Hi Harvest Pointe Honestly , i’m disappointed! I would not recommend anyone going to that veterinarian. The husband and I drove 30 minutes and I wasted $120 just to be told by the veterinarian that there is nothing that can be done for my baby budgie, other than Euthanizing my baby budgie, or letting it live out its life with the disability and a possible brain injury from falling out of its nest. I thought that the veterinarian wanted us there to take a CT scan, but then she continued on to say that an MRI would be in the best interest but that it couldn’t be done at your location. That it had to be done either in Saskatchewan or Calgary. In all honesty, it seemed like the Vet wasn’t concerned or just didn’t care! This place is honestly just a money grab! Wasn’t offered to purchase any anti-inflammatory for my budgie or just anything! Any other advice that was given I Could’ve figured that out it was just common sense! I honestly think that this visit to the vet did more harm than good for the budgie. Prior to the visit, the mom was feeding the baby budgie. Even though she was having a hard time. After this visit, the Mom completely and all together, neglected, the baby budgie. How do I know? There’s two baby budgies and the other one was being fed while the injured one was not being fed! Lastly, To answer your question would I recommend this location to any of my family or friends, no I wouldn’t!

I have only had amazing experiences at Harvest Pointe and have been coming here for years. It is on the opposite side of the city from my house but it is well worth the drive because there's no place better for the care of my bird. I recently had an appointment and was worried about leaving on time but the entire staff rallied around me to get me out of there as timely and smoothly as possible. I really appreciate the expertise and the dedication of all the staff there. I always feel respected and valued after every visit.

I’ve been coming here for my pet frog, he’s quite a challenge and his health has always been up and down. He passed away recently and their after death services have been wonderful. I will absolutely continue to bring my exotic pets here, since every single appointment was incredibly helpful and fantastic. If you have an exotic pet, especially a frog, I recommend you come here!!

If I could give Harvest Pointe a 10/10 I would. They are absolutely amazing. I have two rabbits who refuse to bond and was given amazing advice from Dr.McEwen, even sent websites for guidance in the follow up email after the visit. The veterinarian is SO amazing and made my baby feel super safe and relaxed. They helped when I wasn’t able to purchase the medication and prescribed more when I called as they both caught ear mites… they have GREAT prices on medications. I love this vet office and HIGHLY recommend especially for exotic pets. They are my main vet now and I’ll bring them again. I’m a vet assistant and can confidently say they definitely know how to treat your animals right. Thank you so much Harvest Pointe for your amazing dedication to our pets❤️and yes this is my true feelings about this vet office as they treated me and my bunny with respect, genuine care and made me feel super comfortable to talk with the doctor. It’s hard to find a exotic vet in Edmonton and Harvest Pointe definitely doesn’t disappoint

If you are looking for an exotic vet, this is the place to go. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and their prices are cheaper than any other exotic vet that I have been to. The location is also vey clean and tidy, with a welcoming atmosphere. I brought my senior bird in and they were nothing but professional and kind. I was with them for 2 years, as the did check up on my bird. They provided help and support when my bird got sick. They gave me sympathy when my bird was diagnosed with a tumor, and help me provide end of life care. They helped me with cremation process and provided me with many supports. They even made a donation to a bird rescue in his honour. This is a great place to go to.
