How to Save Money at Currents Veterinary Centre

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have always had exceptional care with Currents Veterinary Team. Especially today (Dec. 24th) as I came in last minute for a second opinion from another vet clinic in the city. Dr. Lee took the time to review and show me all of the images and clinical findings to date for my dog and was able to educate me on treatment plans and ongoing care. Dr Lee recommended a way more through treatment plan. I felt like he really cared and wanted the best for my dog! ...highly recommend, the receptionists, RVT's and assistants all went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable!

Amazing. My leopard gecko had tail rot and it was progressing very quickly. They had no appointments but told me to come down and we were squeezed in between procedures. Dr Chappel was amazing, so caring even though it was tiny gecko, she completed a full exam and explained she would have to make him drop the tail. The cost was very reasonable for an exotic pet and you can truly feel that everyone here cares about the animals and it is not all about money. All the staff were so kind and accommodating. I will be taking all my pets to this amazing veterinarian from now on. Thank you so much for helping my little guy.

As someone that’s dealt with various vet clinics over the years- for my horses, cows, a pot belly piggy, cats, dogs, and now my two bunnies and Guinea pigs- I cannot say enough positive things about everyone I’ve interacted with at Currents Vet. When my Guinea pig, Maui, was quite sick in September, they fit me in for as soon as I could be there. Dr. Chappell was kind, caring, and incredibly informative. When it was time for Maui to head to piggy heaven, Dr. Chappell and staff never rushed us, and let myself and my partner take all the time we needed to say goodbye. It was the best experience I could have hoped for in such a sad circumstance. I really appreciate Dr. Chappell’s knowledge and expertise in the exotics world. Now that one of my bunnies isn’t feeling well, she and the team have been amazing to talk with and have offered exceptional support. Samantha, Jenna, and Allison have been wonderful to communicate with back and forth, and have also been consistently kind. As someone who feels very passionately about the care and health of my animal family members, I am so relieved to have found Currents. The peace of mind it gives me to have a veterinary team I trust to take care of my pets is a wonderful feeling. Could not recommend Currents enough!

First time I’ve had to go to the vet with my cat, this place is so so amazing and they booked him in right when I called and had us in within the hour and found a solution to the problem, as a person with high anxiety they gave me lots of knowledge on what to do and what to look for and are always so happy to answer any questions I had over the phone after his appointment to help ease my mind. They also offered to give his stomach little check ups to make sure he’s okay without charging me extra. I’m really grateful for this place and their awesome staff! Thank you guys!

Dr. Chappell was wonderful. Everyone was so kind and caring. I brought in my guinea pig and he was treated so well. Usually he is cautious around new people and tends to bite, but he was very comfortable here and did well with all of the staff. They answered all of my questions, showed me my guinea pigs x-ray, talked in detail what the x ray is showing and what treatment is needed. Overall it was a great experience.
