Extremely disappointed …
*** UPDATE***
It gets worse. I was contacted by a Trupanion representative as promised in the response below and I was directed to start a GoFund me page, this was what they offered for “support”. I think this speaks for itself as to the ethics of this company and showcases their lack of support for rescue animals.
I am absolutely disgusted with this company. We rescued a little dog from Texas and through no fault of ours or the rescue, he recently tested heart worm positive. He was abandoned and once brought in to the rescue was put on a heart worm preventative medication and we have continued his heart worm preventative since coming in to our care. Heart worm is rampant in the southern US and unfortunately it is not un-common for rescue dogs to contract this disease. We started the treatments to save his life as this is fatal if left untreated. The treatments are very expensive and are very intense and the next few months are going to be difficult for us. Trupanion has denied our claim to assist in paying for these treatments saying they do not pay for treatments for parasites where there is a preventative available. I explained the situation to the company, that he is a rescue and that a preventative was not available to him until he came in to the care of the rescue. The rescue organization did everything right by putting him on the preventative as soon as he was brought in off the streets of Texas. We were not neglectful and he was on this preventative when we opened up our policy. He tested negative on his first test which was done in Texas but had to be retested as per protocol and tested positive on his second test which was once he came in to our care. We did everything right and yet Trupanion refuses to help out with this unfortunate situation. Reggie will recover from this and we will make sure that he gets the best care despite the lack of support from our insurance company. We are extremely disappointed as Trupanion was the company that was recommended to us by the rescue organization that specifically rescues dogs from Texas but they will not support treatments for an illness that is common in rescue dogs from this area. These poor animals need all the help they can get and we feel very strongly that there should have been support from Trupanion. We can only hope that in the future Trupanion will reconsider this and include some type of clause in their policy to support heart worm treatments for rescue dogs.
