Expensive and Doesn't Cover Enough

The service is very good on the phone and the processing expedient. I also like the Vet direct pay option. What I am completely unhappy with is that several times a year the premium keeps going up even though I do not use it. It has gone up 22% since I began 5 years ago. I spend a lot of money on preventative care for my dog. I should get a better premium for taking good care of my dog, like my car insurance, which gives me better rates for being a good driver. Then once in a great while when I do use the insurance, the payout is extremely small. ie. my bill can be $300 and I get $48 back. Horrible. But now i'm stuck with this insurance company. Buyer beware.

Pleased with Service

My pet was not ill, but was in for a regular checkup. Trupanion encouraged me to send in the documentation of all my previous visits to the vet.

Trupanion is the best plan for my cats

I have had trupanion for over three years and do not regret it. My male mainecoon has had several major urinary blockages and this last episode ended with a major surgery procedure. The bills have been in the thousands and trupanion was there for reinbursement and quickly. I have referred friends to trupanion because they have been so great. The best part is I know I can take care of my furry family any time they are sick without the extra burden of financial strain.

Just plain terrible

When our dog developed a chronic illness which would last for years, Trupanion dumped our policy. They cancelled it without cause. When I called them, they made up multiple conflicting reasons, and eventually it became clear that they were only interested in profitable clients. The way they do it is at the renewal point, they are actually starting a new policy every year, so they just choose not to offer a new policy to unprofitable pets (and all pets 14 and over). They say they never drop pets, which is technically true, they just don't give a "new" policy to them. If you have a sudden illness, which won't result in regular payments by Trupanion, then they can be pretty good, (they will want to keep you to try to get their money back), but just hope you never need long term help, because they will not want your business anymore and you WILL be left on your own.

Payout Limits

Unlimited lifetime payouts on eligible conditions with no payout limits-ever.

Deductible

You can choose your deductible from $0 – $1000, in $5 increments, to fit your budget. Trupanion offers a lifetime, per condition deductible meaning that once the deductible is met for an eligible condition, you never have to meet it again. That condition is covered for life. This is great for chronic conditions that can span the entirety of a pet’s life such as allergies or cancer.

Age Limits

All pets under 14 years old can enroll. Once enrolled, pets stay insured regardless of age.

Waiting Period

Accidents: 5 days Illnesses: 30 days Other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.

Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries.
