Depending on the plan Trupanion covers up to 90% of eligible expenses, has unlimited payouts-always, and can pay your vet bill, within seconds, at time of checkout, so all you pay is your portion (anything not covered by Trupanion). They have transformed the way pet insurance handles claims by eliminating the reimbursement process.

Two Thumbs Down for every claim
Never easy with Trupanion, I have had dogs for over 20 years and always had insurance. Based on the recommendation of my vet (which he has since changed,) this is the first time I have insured with Trupanion, I have had very few claims over the last 10 years and every single one has been difficult and painful, I have claimed easily 4-5x this much on my other dog with another provider and never once had any trouble. This time really was ridiculous, when the claim was bounced back for a dental that was not done in the 3-month recommended period when the clinics were closed for anything but emergency procedures due to the global pandemic and the dental was re-booked 4x and finally done when they were allowed to do so. Between rate hikes outside of what I have ever paid on other dogs, or with the other provider than insures my other pet, which has way more claims than this dog, I can honestly say I will never recommend Trupanion to anyone, and my vet also does not now generally recommend Trupanion either. As I own a business that services about 10,000 pet owners a year, this has been a lesson well learned. Unfortunately, I have nothing positive to say at all.

Cruciate ligament repair surgery
The process time was very quick and fairly easy to submit the claims. The amounts or things that are not covered were disappointing. After the visit with the regular vet, we feel that everything to do with the surgical vet should have been covered. The follow up appointments especially.
Monthly Cost
Monthly cost varies due to multiple factors including: species, breed, age at enrollment, gender, and postal code.
Coverage
One simple plan covers new injuries and illnesses, hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions—once the deductible is met, Trupanion pays 90% of the remaining invoice.

Payout Limits
Unlimited lifetime payouts on eligible conditions with no payout limits-ever.
Deductible
You can choose your deductible from $0 – $1000, in $5 increments, to fit your budget.
Trupanion offers a lifetime, per condition deductible meaning that once the deductible is met for an eligible condition, you never have to meet it again. That condition is covered for life. This is great for chronic conditions that can span the entirety of a pet’s life such as allergies or cancer.
Age Limits
All pets under 14 years old can enroll.
Once enrolled, pets stay insured regardless of age.
Waiting Period
Accidents: 5 days
Illnesses: 30 days
Other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.
Exclusions
Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries. That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like:
Examination fees
Wellness and preventive care
Elective, or cosmetic procedures
Sales tax, where applicable
