Mixed feelings
Trupanion was a huge saving grace for the life of our dog. Unfortunately we lost her in February to cancer, but Trupanion allowed us to make decisions based on quality of life, not finances. I totaled our claims and they were over $75K throughout her life. Very easy to submit through clinics, and never had to worry about paying up front. I would have given 5 stars, but their monthly premium felt a bit like robbery. In the 9 years we had her, our monthly premium had increased over 250% by the end. Also, very distasteful at time of euthanasia. Trupanion had sent an email notifying that our policy had been cancelled and closed out (since my dog had passed away) before I had even left the vet clinic after losing her. It felt very heartless. As you progress with Trupanion you become trapped; either raise your deductible, pay the crazy monthly premium increases, or cancel insurance with pre-existing conditions for other providers. I have mixed feelings about Trupanion because they obviously saved us a ton of money, but their monthly premiums are more than my home insurance and feels like they are taking advantage of pet owners. It feels a bit irrelevant to claim that your monthly premiums don't increase based on your claims, but that they increase based on claims in your area. Therefore, my claims obviously contribute to claims in my area. It's actually infuriating how expensive these monthly premiums have become, and I know that many other Trupanion members are feeling very robbed by these premium increases yearly. It has caused me to shop around for my next pet, even though I had been with Trupanion for 9 years.
EDIT: Continue to be disappointed with Trupanions stock response regarding their pricing when other providers have much lower premiums, covering the same advanced technology Trupanion claims drives their prices. They completely bypassed my feedback regarding their process when an animal is euthanized and focused solely on their stock response. I’m not sure why they offer to discuss their pricing when you will just be given the same response over and over.
