Please be more transparent with your pet coverage!

I was very pleased with the initial customer service upon registration. Like some other reviews I also wish Trupanion had been more transparent with our numerous conversations as far as what they claim to offer customers. I'd like to believe we all have the best interests of our pets at heart. We wanted to give our dog the best possible treatment so we signed her up. I made the mistake of thinking an injured leg was an injury (5 day waiting period upon signing up) and not an illness (30 day waiting period upon signing up). We took her in to have it looked at on Day 26 thinking I was within restrictions to have it examined. (She hasn't needed any meds or treatment since...just rest). Long story short, her examination and x-rays weren't covered nor will they ever be for her leg in the future. Turns out that there is a long list of conditions that fit into their "illness" category. Please don't make the same mistake that I did. Wait the full 30 days for ANYTHING if possible!!! Now we are without pet insurance coverage not for just one leg, but now for both for the rest of her life. I couldn't be more upset I thought I was making the best choice for our pet but it turns out I made the worst move possible by ruining her chances of full coverage for her in the years to come.

My dog Jackson and Trupanion

After losing our Newfoundland dog at 10 years old and the mountain of expenses for treatment prior to his passing made us vow if we got another dog, to get insurance. We got a lovely lab mix and tried to stay away from thoroughbreds because they have more health issues and a shorter life span. Jackson was very healthy until he developed an allergy condition. It took a very long time for the vet to figure out that was the problem and a fair amount of expense. Once the diagnosis was confirmed, Trupanion went back through all of the invoices and applied them to our deductible of $500. We didn't expect that but were extremely happy they did that for us. Jackson's monthly costs for his allergy condition are far more than we pay in premiums and so we are extremely grateful for the coverage we receive. Just recently Jackson has been having trouble with lameness and a subsequent diagnosis of polyarthritis. The testing alone to come up with a diagnosis has been expensive but once our deductible was paid, we only had to pay 10% of everything except the vet visit. If we had to pay all of this, we would be in financial trouble. The only thing I would say in the negative is to make sure you know you have to pay the taxes on the full amount in addition to your 10%. I just got finished a back and forth conversation disputing the amount, just to discover it was the taxes of about $260 that was the issue. It does state in our policy that taxes are not covered but I never noticed it before. Maybe make it a bit more obvious to people going in so they are well aware of this. I would recommend Trupanion to anyone with a pet. Their commitment to your pet and its health has never been in question for me. They always ask me to give Jackson a little love from them on every payment email I get. Sure, maybe it's a form letter but I still appreciate it:) Thanks Trupanion!

When an issue arose, Trupanion came through.

We purchased a Bernese knowing full well that they are prone to certain health problems. So far, Derby has proven that true in spades! He is just turning 3, has marked dysplasia in both hips, an allergy which results in excessive itching without continuous daily medication and a genetic abnormality which has resulted in extensive abnormal dental development and a smaller than usual skull size. Two of these will require expensive surgical procedures in the future. Trupanion has provided coverage as indicated on their website and brochure. The claim process is simple and easy.

I am a new client that just signed up but…

I am a new client that just signed up but I’ve been working in Vet Hospitals for years and I’ve always said I would choose Trupanion over any of the other insurance companies. Everybody has their own experience and opinion but Trupanion was the company that most clients used and I saw all the coverage they gave their clients first hand. I get the initial 30 day wait seems to be an issue for people but I think it’s completely fair that you have a healthy pet going into this process. It sounds like the u happy people knew there was an issue before signing up and they are mad that their scam didn’t work on this company. Anyways, so far I have had to online chat once to fix my account and the experience I had with an employee was so great! She was just so helpful and extremely friendly.

Best insurance I've ever bought.

Never had a problem with this company, I got a quote for my little Jack Pincher's surgery, it was approved and received my 90% within a week.

Coverage

Payout Limits

Unlimited lifetime payouts on eligible conditions with no payout limits-ever.

Deductible

You can choose your deductible from $0 – $1000, in $5 increments, to fit your budget. Trupanion offers a lifetime, per condition deductible meaning that once the deductible is met for an eligible condition, you never have to meet it again. That condition is covered for life. This is great for chronic conditions that can span the entirety of a pet’s life such as allergies or cancer.

Age Limits

All pets under 14 years old can enroll. Once enrolled, pets stay insured regardless of age.

Waiting Period

Accidents: 5 days Illnesses: 30 days Other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.

Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries.
