Deceitful renewal rates

After obtaining a policy for my Great Dane in 2020 they increased the monthly bill by 40% the following year. I was told by a representative that they hadn’t increased the rate in a while which is why it resulted in such a significant increase and that I shouldn’t expect another large bump in my rate again. Unfortunately the following renewal year the rate increased again by another 27%. Seems like nationwide lures with a reasonable rate only to increase once they have you as a customer. Very deceitful.

I would like to start with the only…

I would like to start with the only thing that went correctly and that was Connie who was on the other end of the phone at Nationwide. She was AMAZING, sensitive and caring and got it done! Now for the reason I am leaving a review... I have one by one left Nationwide with my pack of dogs due to the poor quality of underwritten pet insurance. Perhaps over the some the things I will mention have improved, but my experience has been they they have not. It was all fine until I NEEDED insurance help with my best girl Addie. A young ENglish Cream Golden Retriever who came from BRED with HEART AKC accreditation as well as all her families genetic testing and clearances. She was bred which is not a covered benefit, only TRUPANION covers breeding expenses. When she went into labor she did not progress and I took her the ER Vet which was during COVID btw so things were also done differently. They did a C-section and discovered that my Addie only has 1 pup and it was stillborn. The vet called me and said I needed to spay her that sadly she genetically was born with only one kidney and it was very irregular in shape and size. I agreed. From there it all began ... She needed a lot of labs, a lot of medication and a lot of medical attention for the CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE that was causing her to have critical health issues. I wrote a detailed letter when submitting her invoices explaining that I knew they didn't cover breeding but this was not a breeding issue. The breading actually is how we found out she was in critical health. Her behavior and symptoms were all 100% normal! I sent in ALL the paperwork from the ER VET and our regular vet. Nationwide kept sending me letters asking for more info but they had ALL the info. Then they would ask for a couple more weeks to make a decision, Finally it was 6 months later and had enough! I had paid into them for YEARS with no claims on all my other pets and probably at least a year for Addie as well. I sent in a letter and told them if I didn't get a decision within 2 weeks I would file a complaint with the California Insurance Commissioner. Within 10 days I received a check for all the invoices I had submitted to begin with and all that I had filed after to a maximum of the benefit year which was $7500. In an 18 month time frame she had over $25k in medical bills to keep her healthy. She would have routine follow up and then her Creatinine would spike and she'd have to go to ICU for animals. We would get it down and she would act 100% herself again for months. So for the cost of about $56 a month I had only $15k paid out of the $25k in expenses! My fault for not reading the policy or comparing! Now I use Trupanion and have had great results and unlimited claims paid for about the same cost and by about I mean within $5 a month from what I paid Nationwide! NOW GET THIS, I SUBMITTED A CLAIM FOR HER FINAL EUTHANASIA BECUASE AFTER 2 YEARS OF THIS HER BODY WAS DONE AND I WOULD NOT TORTURE HER. SHE DIED PEACEFULLY IN MY ARMS AT HOME. NATIONWIDE continued to BILL my credit card for an additional year ( It's my pet cc for business and unfortunately I was not closely watching the charges). I had fraud on the card and switched it so they could no longer bill it. I received a cancellation notice for Addie due to non-payment. She has been dead for about a year and they paid me for her euthanasia. I was told I did not have to cancel it that the euthanasia would automatically cancel the policy. Today I called and in speaking with Connie I told her upfront this is emotional for me due to the huge loss i still feel from losing Addie, and it is fueled by having been wrongfully charged all this time. She was kind and understanding, found the claim for the euthanasia and is helping me get reimbursed. SHE is the only reason I am even giving a star!

This insurance is completely worthless

This insurance is completely worthless. Want to spay/neuter your pet? Not covered. Yearly exams and vaccines? Not covered. Pet needs meds? Not covered. I have three dogs and my vet offered an inhouse rewards type program that I turned down due to having this worthless policy. Then when I went to submit my claims they were almost completly denied reembursment. We ended up spending over $3000 out of pocket and only recieved about $200 in approved claims. Youre better getting on a plan with your vet or just saving your money. This policy is complete trash!
