Cost does not outweigh the benefit
For me, the cost of the health insurance for my pets, to include preventative care, is higher than what I have paid so far at the vet out of pocket. Personally, I cannot afford to pay a monthly premium & the majority of the vet bills together. I am only getting reimbursed for less than what I pay in my monthly premiums, so for me, it is cheaper to just pay the vet out of pocket & not pay to an insurance company on top of that. I have been reimbursed for the preventative care. But, since my pets had a skin infection the day I adopted them & I didn't have health insurance for them 3 weeks before I bought them, the skin infection screening & medications are not covered because it is considered a "preexisting condition." Therefore, I have wasted a minimum of $400 by paying for the pet insurance. I will say, for pets with long term conditions, etc. the ASPCA may be a better option for those customers. The website is easy to navigate & the reimbursement process is very simple. But, I just can't afford it.
