How to Save Money at Elm Grove Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Between thorough animal care and patient/pleasant customer service, the employees at Elm Grove have made it one of the best facilities I’ve visited since moving to my area 7 years ago and am happy to have returning services to, so much so that willingly drive an hour to get there! They have been flexible with me and my scheduling needs to be able to obtain the care and follow ups for my animals. The staff is very friendly and personable with each client and while they seemingly have a sea of customer/animal client base, they seem to remember who is who which leaves out the potential of any chart to client mismatch. I’ve only been here a few times since I’ve started using them as my vet a couple months ago, but each time I go, they never fail to provide fast and great care/service to me and my animals. As a bonus; the prices are phenomenal in comparison to other places and they take the guess work out of needed emergency services from day one as they’ve already done the work to obtain a whole page worth of emergency animal clinics in a 3 hour radius of their facility complete with names, addresses, and contact information. I highly recommend Elm Grove for their services!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

At approximately 9 AM I took my cat to be spayed, and was told that I would receive a call when my cat was ready to be picked up; however, hours went by with not so much as and update, so at about 1 PM, I went ahead an called them to get an ETA on when my cat should be ready for pickup. Before I'm even able to finish my question, I was rudely cut off by the lady on the other end of the phone, "Spaying is longer for different cats. We will call YOU." I was then hung up on to, well, question what, I never got a call again, so once 4-5PM rolled around, I called again, to then be told, that my cat has been ready for pickup, I was even asked, "They never called you?" After this call, I was called again a little bit after 5PM, when I was on my way to pick my cat up to finally get the, let's say, official confirmation that my cat was ready to be picked up. Not including the times I called, it took them a little over 8 hours to call me. That, including the rude response I got when I first called, is absolutely unprofessional, and ridiculous. This was my first time ever taking my cat here, it was a mistake, I will never go back.

When I made the appointment I was told the 8th drop off from 8:30-10 a.m remind you I repeated the time and date back like I always do.. The 8th happened to be on a Wednesday, and the drop off for my cat was a Thursdays the 9th.. so once I called that Thursday morning they told me drop off at 8:30-10:30 a.m.. 15 minutes later I got that call to confirm the appointment and then told me drop off was at 10 a.m... I as I'm sure others take of work or make other arrangements for their pet so I was not happy. So, my cat got neutered on the 9th and been super bad since..not ate anything, drank maybe one time, peeing in the area he lays. I've taken several of my pets here and been satisfied everytime but this one.
