How to Save Money at Allegheny Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Move to WV a year ago from ny,where we have many large animal vets available. My horse has chronic moon blindness and has had since he was 6mos old. He had a very bad flare up that none of his normal meds would take care of. Allegheny equine was able to get me in very quickly and was able to check over the severity and got my horse back on track to feeling better! To add, the service didn't break the bank either which is a huge plus when you own a walking accident 😁 100/10 would recommend and will definitely continue to use them. It was worth the 2 hour drive to have an honest and straight forward vet that has your pets best interest in mind

I brought my cat in to be spayed. It made me feel a lot more comfortable that I received a call as she woke up from surgery to let me know everything went well. They gave a good run down of how to care for her post surgery. Also really glad to have a sheet to take home in case there was anything I forgot about. They were willing to put a cone on her which made me feel safer since she seems to clean herself more than most cats. Great job overall. Very thorough service and friendly staff!

I have taken my pets here for many years and have always received great service from both Dr. Harvey and Dr. Walker. A couple weeks ago my family just adopted a new large dog and he tore his stitches out from being fixed after we bought him home. I called the vet for an emergency visit at 7:30 by 8 I was at the office. My poor dog was so scared and showing fear aggression towards Dr Harvey and the staff but she was very patient with him and was able to get him sedated without causing him much more anxiety.

I took 3 cats in to be fixed 2 week ago and was told what time I would need to be there to pick them up I was there at 4 as directed that morning. Before they would bring them out I had to pay 255. Plus the vouchers for them. When they brought them out they said no bathing for 3 days but yet they had urinated in their kennels and were totally soaked from pee and reminded me that I couldn't bathe them for 3 days but its ok for them to lay in urine soaked kennels all day after having surgery . I will not take another animal there if this is the way I will be getting them back. It is not fair to the animal that they had to be subject to a surgery and then lay in pee the rest of the time

I had a very bad experience here today. I called for an appointment for my dogs ear pain and was told I had to wait a week. I waited a week and brought her this morning. The sign on the door said owners could go in with sick dogs. All others should wait in their cars. I asked to go in with my dog. I was the only client there at 8:45 in the morning. They said no. One half hour later they brought her back and said she had a severe ear infection in both ears. How does this not qualify as a sick dog? The tech explained it to me and told me the bill for her and my other dog was $218.00. I did not think that was excessive. However, they choose to give her a very expensive medicine that lasts a month instead of giving me cheaper meds that I would have to put in the ear everyday. Had they asked me or offered it to me I probably would have agreed but no one asked they just decided that was what they wanted to do and it didn't matter how I felt about it. I was really insulted and mad. I told the tech you mean for $218 the vet won't even walk out here to talk to me? I had a meltdown in the parking lot. She told me I could not come inside to pay even though I was wearing a mask and keeping a 6 ft distance. I could hardly keep from crying I was so angry. The tech took my credit card and my folder with paperwork back inside and sent Dr Harvey out. I told her how upset I was and that I felt I had been treated badly. She said , "ok". The tech came out with the bill, no folder, no paperwork and no credit card. I started to leave but realized they had kept my card. I had to ask for it to be returned. No apologies from any of them. I left in tears. I do trust them to provide good care for my pets but I also expect to be treated with respect and to be consulted about decisions on treatment. I didn't get either and I didn't get an apology and I didn't get any written info about what treatment I paid for. I feel awful and angry.
