How to Save Money at Antigo Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Shar and Phil - A Year to Volunteer

Thanks so much to y'all for helping us get our Domino an updated rabies vaccine. We're full-time RVers who run a nationwide nonprofit volunteer organization and came to Antigo to do a large project at Raptor Education Group Inc (REGI) where Dr. Lautzenhiser also gives her time. Because of the unique nature of our travels and time, she graciously fit us in (which is very challenging for them since we are not existing clients). We're such fans and if we were coming in to Antigo on a more routine basis, we'd absolutely shift our vet services to this amazing small town clinic. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thanks again for the hospitality Doc. You made us feel so welcome and for that, we're forever grateful!

New patients read my experience/Existing patients make sure you have a back up vet. I have had my cat as a patient here for 2 years. Today I found out that a minor illness (my cat not eating much, vomiting periodically and losing interest in food) is not something they will make an appointment for until the end of July and it’s June! They said I can call back tomorrow and they can see if I can have an ‘urgent’ spot but they fill up so fast, it’s pointless and they ‘probably can’t get me in.’ They don’t keep ANY appointments for their patients beyond their annual appointments for shots. They told me ‘there’s nothing that we can do, take your cat to the emergency vet’. I called another 2 other vets who were stunned by my treatment but couldn’t help me because they’re not taking patients. It’s clear why this vet was taking new patients: they’re inhumane, lack compassion and are disorganized and unprofessional. I have pulled my pet from this clinic and will tell anyone I know about my personal experience. SEND YOUR PET ANYWHERE ELSE OR RISK THEIR HEALTH! I love my pets too much to rely on a vet who sends her patients to an emergency vet for non emergencies & I am not the only person to have this issue - see the other 1 star reviews where the vet makes excuses while taking 0 accountability for their lack of compassion and care. They also try to say other vets can’t see their patients for ‘weeks’ - that’s not true. Other clinics I called said they will see their patients when they’re sick, so that is a lie. I’m uncomfortable with a vet who lies instead of taking responsibility. They claim in response to other concerned customers that they work nights/holidays/weekends-well lots of people do or have and they don’t use it as an excuse. If they’re so busy, they should be upfront that they can only provide routine services like shots. The vet also mentioned that suicide rates in the profession are high and I have lots of compassion for that! If that’s a concern for her staff maybe leadership should take a step back and focus on their mental health, because they seem overwhelmed enough to mention it.UPDATE: Vet did email records the next day and noted our conversation while NEVER stating it was an emergency and claimed I was ‘combative’ which is a lie.I think how they respond to their customers speaks for itself! Notice their response says they don’t have time for all patients ‘not enough vets’. They openly admit this about their clinic, but patients find out when they need help.Again, this vet 1)didn’t tell me the situation was an emergency2)said they had an appointment a month from now3)said they could not offer me the urgent appointment even if I did call the next day (this left 0 options to get my pet in). I told the receptionist I was recording and she put the vet on the phone and offered the end of July appointment. The only threat I made was to take my business elsewhere via email and requested my pet’s records. Their response says ‘think again before you bash any clinic’ - is that a threat?Unprofessional. This vet can make excuses about not making time for pets, I saw that coming seeing their responses here. I’m not getting into a debate about who has a harder job because I’m not sure what that has to do with anything? I never said their job was easy? They also say they had an appointment ‘within days’ - never mentioned on phone. The other vets I talked to said they keep appointments for their patients always. Others had this same issue here, so maybe they should run their policies by the community and see what they do. This vet never said it was an emergency when we spoke and now saying do something? I did that’s why I called? They took my review personally, when it’s an honest recap of my experience so others can make informed choices & I hope it helps someone! I did edit my review so I could fit a character limit but the message hasn’t changed. Vet has sent me emails saying she ‘knows people’ when I asked for my pet’s records and would not stop emailing me even when I threatened to report her for harassment. Yikes!
