How to Save Money at Yakima Humane Society Spay & Neuter Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Super helpful people. I was able to get in before my allotted time slot and get all my appointments lined up beautifully right after! Everyone here is so kind and understanding. My appointment was productive, and they were very knowledgeable and gentle with my kitten.

Everyone here has been so good to us and our pets. We greatly appreciate what they do for the community. Our puppy just had a spay surgery and we had a scare when she houdini'd her way out of a cone, they were able to get her in despite how busy it already was for the day. Our puppy is just fine, but they gave me peace of mind by checking her out for me. We appreciate all of the staff here!

The female who called to tell me that my name came up for my chance at a spay n neuter was so incredibly rude to me and had the ugliest attitude that I would rather pay $500 at a private clinic than ever take my pet here. What if she was the one performing the surgery or in charge of putting my sedated pet back into her crate with stitches ect? If this woman can be so rude over the phone for zero reason then imagine how capable of abusing animals she could be as well. No Thank you. DO BETTER!! PRACTICE KINDNESS!!

My diabetic cat passed away after I had bought 2 cases of pet insulin syringes. I never opened the boxes. Had no idea what to do with them. I called Yakima humane society to donate them. I was very thankful they could use them. If you have a pet that passes away, please consider donating the things you have that are new. Then consider adopting a new fur baby.

4.4 stars. Would have given 5, however I called and left messages and emailed several times with lots of questions and never got a response. This made me even more apprehensive about taking our newly adopted pup there. Then reading some of the bad reviews didn't help. I had been told (and instructions confirmed this) that someone would come out to my car and collect my puppy and take him into the clinic. I would not have a chance to make my dog feel comfortable and say goodbye, or speak to the staff, much less the vet. And I had so many questions and concerns! Would they do a full check up and blood work first to confirm that he was fit for surgery? Was he even old enough to have surgery? I'd wondered about the pre-surgery protocol, like should he eat or drink beforehand. Why in their "contract" did they make such a big deal about not holding them responsible for any surgery mishaps?? All of this uncertainty made me incredibly nervous, and then to think I was expected just to drop him off with them?! I was a wreck the morning of the surgery, but my husband promised me that no way would he leave Charlie if he had any bad feelings about the place, or if he couldn't speak to someone first or take Charlie into the clinic. Later, he called me from there and explained how Macy had come out to the car, spoken with him, invited him into the clinic, spoken to him at length about the process, and had answered all of our questions. He said she was wonderful and obviously loved animals, and was great with Charlie, and the whole vibe there was friendly. So in summary, he was very comfortable about leaving Charlie and was very impressed with everything. What a relief! He picked up Charlie later and everything went well, you couldn't even tell he'd had surgery, there were no issues, he healed up just fine. Many thanks to Kayla at the Ellensburg Adoption Center for facilitating this process!
