How to Save Money at Pet Vet Hospital and Wellness Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Amazing Guinea Pig Vet. Both of my guinea pigs enjoyed their visit. They care about the animals and have saved my oldest guinea pig when she needed a cyst removal. I very recommend this place to all guinea pig owners!

After just one visit they treated my kitty like he was the most special cat in the world! He’s an old boy and does NOT love being at the vet but they were so gentle and professional, and so friendly and up-front with me about everything. I can tell they all love what they’re doing.

*this keeps getting deleted, but I'll keep posting it* I went to this vet FOR YEARS. Loved them. They treated my labs well. Staff changes and I get it. We had a situation a year or so ago with one of our dogs - i raised my eyebrow at how rough the vet was with the dog, and to be honest? She looked frustrated. Dog was scared, but after a good body slamming to stay down while another tech pinned her down - they accomplished what they needed to (I guess) I thought of it as a one off - and proceeded with these guys until now. A week ago we had brought in our other lab who had jumped off the bed and hurt his foot a week or so prior. It wasn't getting better. So we bring him in. They do X Rays. They see a broken bone in the paw. They gave us pills to take the edge off, and said there was nothing else to be done - (I had pushed for it to be wrapped or put in a splint) but they said that it wouldn't do anything. A week goes by, and it's getting worse. I call in - and they don't have anyone available, but want me to drop him off and be seen again. They potentially want to put him into a splint or wrap it (my initial request) I didn't have the ability to drop everything and adhere to the schedule that worked best for them - and that's fine, I get it, it's last minute - but I WAS able to find a vet within my schedule to have him seen. We called THIS vet to have info to be sent to my new vet, and while some things were sent - they couldn't do xrays due to internet problems. We did x-rays at the NEW vet. This vet was blown away that he wasn't put into a splint IMMEDIATELY and said there was no way it was going to get better on it's own, so we made a plan - and then TODAY I realize he's going to run out of pills for the weekend (yes, my fault) so I call THIS vet to refill the prescription. No big deal. 4 hours later I see a missed call requesting I speak with the vet - they say they texted me too but I see nothing. Not even in my spam folder. The receptionist gave me so much attitude about the vet change, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. "Well it's just weird you wouldn't request them from your NEW vet" Lady, they were just available when you weren't and they're WAY better than an emergency vet. I'm just trying to make him feel better, and you're the prescribing vet. "Well the vet will refill the pain pills, but we wanted to see how he was doing" I had already called several days ago because it was getting worse and your times available weren't attainable. He's miserable - and the other vet doesn't know why you didn't put it in a splint to begin with. "It's just weird you called us and not them" I didn't anticipate switching vets. At all. I have 4 animals that call that place THEIR vet. After tonight though? Wow. True colors shine. Attitudes are blaring. You delayed medication because you thought it was weird I didn't ask the new vet and you give me attitude about it? Amazing. THEN the Dr calls back near immediately and I wasn't having it. I know you're trying to save face for the staff member that just dropped the ball, but with how fake and over the top your tone was? I knew it wasn't legitimate. I said no thanks, I'll be getting my prescription filled elsewhere. "Well you already changed vets, so goodbye" Unbelievable. Nobody deserves to be treated like that. I never WANTED to change vets. This unraveled on your side, and if it happened to me? I'm sure it could happen to you - and THAT sucks for all pet owners that call this place home.

Went in for extreme pain in my pups leg. I was given a price that I was ok with. After receiving a outlandish diagnosis, they managed to tack on an additional $200 without explaining to me that it was for another person to look at x-rays. After speaking up about the extra charge they refunded half of that charge because they had conveniently already "completed the review". ... That review I was tricked into paying extra for by the way, only contradicted the original vet who thought it was a genetic issue that 1. Isn't common in the breed, and 2. None of his siblings or past two generations suffer from. So in summary, I paid the better half of $1000 to be told "it's this" and then be told "no it's not" ... leaving me with no resolution, no idea of what's causing him pain, and less money to ultimately resolve the issue. My only positive from this, is the knowledge I'll never go back, and the hope you the reader learn from my mistake and avoid this incompetent vet.

Don't let them trick you into getting blood work don't when your dog has something stuck in it's ear. All they had to look was look in her ear, but they insisted they need to check her blood first. My bad for not using common sense
