How to Save Money at Dr Mom's Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We LOVE Dr Moms! Dr. Roberts is just the BEST, and we love her staff also. When we take our animals in for their visits, she comes in and isn't just in and out of the room. She VISITS with us. We discuss everything from nutrition to housebreaking, and she's got amazing ideas she shares. She's not just a great vet, she's a great human being. I wouldn't want to take my animals any place else.

It was easy for me to get my dog in for his check-up and shots. They had all of their info from when Dr Beamis was in that location. Everyone there is friendly and made us feel welcome. Dr Robert's is nice, thorough, and informative. Thay all made my dog as comfortable as they could.

I really liked the young man who did my kittens first check up and thought I had found my forever vet. Unfortunately, he wasn’t the one working with my cat any of the following times I went in. I watched a couple vet techs disagree/argue about the schedule for my kittens shots which was concerning, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I also had my cat fixed here which didn’t cause any problems, other than being much more expensive than surrounding vets (and of no higher quality treatment). Flash forward about 6 months later, my cat was having some breathing issues and I brought him in. They brought me a list of tests and prices that they wanted to do on him, totaling thousands of dollars. I decided to start with chest X-rays and if that didn’t produce answers, we would build from there. The vet tech informed me they were going to draw blood since they were already doing X-rays and I thought that was a great idea. They brought my cat back in from X-rays and told me “we tried to get a blood sample but he told us no” with NO other details, and left the room. I then notice my cats throat was wet and bleeding. The scheduler came in and I asked what happened to him? She talked to the vet tech who came back in and said they tried to get the blood but he wouldn’t allow them to. So they cut his neck and made him bleed for no reason at all and did not inform me of that detail. It then took the vet so long to review the X-rays, my cat and I were shuffled back into the waiting room so that the room would be free for the following appointments. I waited for what was at LEAST an hour, to be told “they see something on the X-ray but not sure if it’s concerning or completely normal” (!?!?) and that they were sending the X-rays off to review, but not to worry!! Because the guy they go to is amazing and does all the X-ray reviews for Spokane. Was told he is quick and I would have solid answers in just a couple days. Well a whole week went by, and I called the clinic asking for results. They said there was no record in the system of what they did or were waiting for, so the receptionist said she needed to “ask around” and call me back. I finally got a returned call from the vet herself who openly admitted “I forgot we were waiting on these results!” (Too busy running their $$$ mill to have actual recollection/knowledge of their patients care). The results read to me were ridiculous and vague. They did not officially diagnose ANYTHING, but stated they “could not rule out pneumonia”. The doctors idea was to start him on a steroid “in case of pneumonia” and she stated the name of it, then backtracked and said “oh oops not that one, that would be bad for pneumonia”. I said I needed to talk to my partner about what we would do and asked for the documents/results to be sent to me. I was then put on hold so the vet could verify that they had my email. Had she let me get a word in, I would have let her know they do have my email as this is how I receive invoices. Was on hold for several minutes and the receptionist came to the line “how can I help you?” Uuhhh… the vet just told me she was verifying my email to send test results. I was then transferred again and this time a male answered the phone and said “I think we got everything we needed from you…?” And I had to explain the vet wanted to verify my email was on file. At this point, I knew I would never return there and asked him to forward me my cat’s entire file and medical history. I have not and will not be back. You can tell some of the people there have good intentions and are just doing the best they can with the resources provided, but several are snotty and unorganized and it seems like they have taken on more pets/clients than they can handle and are overwhelmed.I tend to be a very forgiving and understanding person but there were just too many red flags, miscommunications, and complications for me to be able to trust them with my pets life.
