How to Save Money at Northwest Veterinary Surgical Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Update June 2023: We took our dog to Dr. Belknap for her second TPLO surgery this year and she recovered even faster than her first surgery. Once again, incredible level of care and service provided by Dr. Belknap and the team at Willapa Vet! Thanks again for helping our pup keep running! Dr. Belknap and his team could not have been more amazing at helping us through our dogs TPLO surgery. They were incredibly communicative throughout the whole process via email, phone and in person. Dr. Belknap was incredibly knowledgeable and clearly experienced in the procedure. He was also kind enough to stay in personal contact with me for questions and regular check-ins. It was really convenient for me since I lived an hour from the vet clinic that he would do virtual checkups via pictures and videos I sent him of our dog. Overall, I’m extremely happy I decided to go through his clinic for our dogs surgery. His clinic was much more reasonably priced and 2 weeks faster at booking our dog for her initial appointment. My only regret is that I don’t live closer to make them my regular vet!

I’m late to the opening but I can speak about Dr. Belknap’s surgical abilities. He has performed 2 surgeries on my Sheltland Sheepdog named Max, Pan Carpal Arthrodiese and removal of a philbella behind the knee. In both cases Dr. Belknap was professional, kind, caring and attentive to all of Max’s needs and mine too. I can’t express enough my gratitude for his ability to perform such intricate delicate surgery. I would highly recommend him if your pet needs a surgery that involves a stead hand, caring heart and excellent skills with communication. Thank you Dr. Belknap you gave Max more time to enjoy his life in comfort. Best Regards, Joanie

Our entire family is indebted to Dr. Belknap and his staff for the amazing care our dog, Zoey, received before, during, and after her TPLO surgery. Zoey is our daughter’s dog and she wanted to be responsible for the cost of her care. When we researched local vets, we were shocked at the cost, and turned off by the vagueness in the estimates. Somehow I stumbled on Willapa Veterinary Clinic. Boy am I glad I I did. I was pleased to see that Dr. Belknap was Board Certified and seemed highly experienced. I was pleasantly surprised by the estimate which was very detailed and emailed to us in advance, and I was completely blown away when the doctor himself reached out by text to discuss Zoey’s x-rays and recommendations. We ended up having a 30 min conversation with Dr. Belknap while he was walking his dogs on the beach after hours. We knew we’d found the right vet to place our trust in. We drove two hour for the surgery. While Zoey was in surgery, we visited local shops, and when we’d tell folks why we were there, we’d hear stories about how fabulous Dr. Belknap was. The glowing praise reinforced that we’d made the right choice. In post-op, Dr. Belknap texted us with an update and pictures of the X-rays. We stopped by before they closed for the night, and Dr. Belknap came out after a long day and visited with us like we were old friends for over 30 minutes. Who does that anymore?? I was really nervous about post-op care, but it’s been going very well and Dr. Belknap has kept true to his promise that we’d be supported all the way by continuing to reach out with texts and calls. Anyone who is facing TPLO surgery for their fuzzy friend should definitely check out Dr. Belknap. The surgery costs can’t be beat, the surgical talent and experience is awesome and your pet will be in the very best of hands with Dr. Belknap and his team.

Dr. Belknap performed a TPLO surgery on my dog a couple of months ago. He was extremely communicative the day of the surgery as well as the following several weeks of recovery. My dog had his final follow-up yesterday and is super happy to be completely off any meds and restrictions. 😀

Jasmine is our almost 19 year old year old Australian Cattle Dog. She was experiencing significant ongoing weight loss due to a mammary gland tumor that was continually leaking serum and blood. After review with Dr. Belknap we decided to go ahead and have him remove the mammary gland tumor. It turned out to be a complicated mammary tumor and a challenging case for such a geriatric dog. The veterinary team providing the anesthesia kept our elderly dog safe during the surgery. The results are wonderful. A week after the surgery she often acts like a puppy and has a renewed interest in her toys which she carries around the house. She has a spring in her step and joy for her role as a family companion. It is always hard to see an elderly dog in discomfort and losing weight despite adequate food. It is with joy that I report Jasmine is enjoying life again as an older dog and looks like she has had a tummy tuck. Thank you Dr. Belknap and Willapa Veterinary staff!
