How to Save Money at Mount Vernon Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The team that looked at my horse were very professional and explained everything in great detail. My horse was calm and cooperative thanks to their expertise. I cannot recommend them highly enough. So very pleased with the quality and care my horse received. They are now her primary doctors. Thank you!!!

Dr. Viv and her helper are so skillful and friendly. They took care my two Andalusian with floating teeth and annual shots, everything went on so smoothly. My horse settled down to accept the bit much better right on that afternoon's ride. I will highly recommend my friends to use their service.

Dr. Claire is amazing. I've been using her for two years for our equine program to maintain the health of our therapy horses. She performs the best, most comprehensive lameness exam you'll find in Snohomish or Skagit counties. She's patient, and is even willing to "dance" with horses that are a little sensitive to vet treatments or needles. She's always willing to give you two or three options in order to fit the needs of the horse and your budget. What I also appreciate is are her views on her exam findings. For example, she may say that what she's writing looks bad on paper, but because of something the horse has been born with, it's not really what it may seem w/certain course of action.

Update- Dr Claire is super amazing!! I took my mare up the the facility and she did a preliminary lameness and evaluation before moving into the tests she was scheduled for and the evaluation was so thorough and the assistant Anne was great with my horse and very personable and funny. The first test Dr Claire did (scope for ulcers) turned up with a severe case. The whole procedure was performed so professionally and kind. I was informed about all the findings along the way. The treatment plan was laid out well and detailed and although my horse has an awful problem I feel so calm and confident with dr Claire as her vet. Again- I highly recommend her and NW vet! Dr Claire is amazing! She came out yesterday for an urgent lameness issue and was great about diagnosing it and explaining to me why she came up with that diagnosis and the treatment plan (abscess). 6 months ago my mare went from great in the arena to a bucking bronco (visibly pain related) which I’ve had 3 other vets try to fix with no success. I mentioned this to Dr Claire and she told me a few things that she thought would be causing the bucking with the info I gave her along with how my mare was behaving while she was here. They all sounded very sensible and she explained them well so I asked for her to schedule another appointment to look into these. She answered all my questions before I could ask them. I feel like no other vet has been so knowledgeable about the physical problems a horse can have that affect their behavior in the arena. Her having years of riding experience probably help her bridge the gap between the physical health of the horse and success in the arena. She is also so friendly, honest, and real. She really does care and understands that these are 1300 lb expensive animals we put our lives on the line riding and I’m glad I finally found a vet that’s going to help me get back in the saddle and move forward towards my riding goals. And a shout out to the scheduler that answered my call and facilitated getting Dr Claire out so quickly!
