How to Save Money at Northwest Animal Eye Specialists - Kirkland

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog suffered from non healing corneal ulcer for 2 months. We tried different kinds of antibiotics but it just didn’t go away. She, my dog, was constantly symptomatic (squinting, edema, tears), so we made an appt with this eye clinic. We met Dr. Zirofsky for initial exam, and she well explained what was going on with her eye and what would be the best treatment for it. She took her time with us and reassured us with her knowledge and kindness. We decided to try eyeQ amniotic eye drop first for 2 weeks to see if it would do the magic; It didn’t. So the next best option was getting a grid keratotomy surgery. We could get that scheduled fairly quickly, and the surgery was only like 2 hours with sedation. First 2-3 days after surgery, her eye became bluish with discharges, but it started looking much better from day 4. They put a bandage lense, which lasted about 10 days. We met Dr. Zirofsky 2 weeks after the surgery, and my dog’s eye was completely healed!! She once again thoroughly examined my dog’s eyes and shared her opinions. Cost-wise, I honestly think it was reasonable. Yes, initial examination seemed to be a bit expensive, but when I compared stain test and medicine (same kinds) with other clinics, it was close to regular vet’s price and cheaper than urgent clinics. And the surgery cost itself was as expected and they provided detailed list. So overall, I am glad I chose this clinic, and my dog and I feel lucky that we met Dr. Zirofsky. Thank you!

Was charged $500 for a doctor to spend 5 min in room with us. Worst of all, the techs were rough, forceful and wanted to muzzle my sweet dog who was absolutely behaving, non-aggressive and has never been. If anything, he was scared from being handled so rough. They throw him in the table, start sticking things in his eyes without even saying hello or calming first in any way. He was squirming of course, and I asked if I could hold him while to make him more comfortable and they said it was against policy...? It's against their policy to let me calm my dog? I would never go back to these people. Muzzle my sweet, old dog that was scared and did nothing even remotely aggressive? The techs need training, normally techs or vets make it a calm experience, say hello, pet their heads, earn a little trust, not force calm dogs into new stressful, situations. They should not be working with animals, probably better suited for construction or warehouse work. For $500, I expect a WAY better experience for my dog, even if the doctor was indifferent and rushed, I expect him to be treated kindly.

His vet had noticed some cloudiness in my dog's eyes and I found this clinic while researching Ophthalmologists. I submitted the new patient form online, received an almost immediate response, had his records sent over and had an appointment confirmed that day for just over a week out. We went this morning. Very friendly and organized team. We saw a visiting doctor (Dr Jamie Schorling) who is caring and comforted my dog during the unfamiliar exam. Recommended.

I have never written a review until now and unfortunately it is not a good one. My cat & I went to see Dr. Jones for my cat was having a eye issue with her eye having a foggy coating and blood strains. As a responsible pet owner and a concerned one, and after seeing my primary veterinarian who couldn’t figure out how to fix the eye issue or what the issue was, I booked a specialist. This is when I went to the specialist in Kirkland and saw Dr. Jones. She was nice however she was very short, did not know the issue either, and I had to ask the questions like “what are the next steps”, “could this be a issue in the future”, ect when I thought she would be just tell me. If I hadn’t asked the questions she would have said nothing and just let me leave the appointment. I understand it is not her fault for not knowing a diagnostic or what the issue was either for my cat’s eye however She said she would get back to me for a follow up with maybe taking eye drops for the blood strains but she just emailed me a report. I sent emails and left voicemails and so has my primary veterinarian who wanted to know also what the next steps are. The receptionist said she would get back to me this week and she never did. I get that my cats eye isn’t a emergency but again, as a responsible pet owner who is willing to spend $500 dollars to take care of her pet you think the doctor would be willing to at least follow up with a phone call and respect me and my cat as a client. Disappointed that I spent all this money to basically get ghosted and taken advantage of my politeness and patiences.

Dr Jones and her team had treated many of my dogs since the opening of her clinic here. I am so thankful to have access to her expertise. She and her team had treated my dogs for growth on eye lid, in-grown eye lashes, growth under eyelid, and many more conditions. The staff is so compassionate and helpful.
