How to Save Money at Animal Emergency & Specialty

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my dog in on Tuesday and got the help we needed. It was mostly diagnostics and medicine that ended up paying $1,500. That would be fine but today my dog took a turn for the worse and when my family member called while I was at work, they were told there was no emergency vets in and if we needed help our dog would have to go somewhere else. How can there be no vets?! And how could they not care enoufy to not follow up or call later at least? Luckily my dog is okay now that we found somewhere else but we know not to call here again.

The best ER Vet I have encountered. Twice they have helped & treated my pups. They have proven they are honest, trustworthy, genuine, communicative give damn about you and your furbaby(ies). I hope no one has to reach out. If you do, go no where else! I only wish they were regular vet providers. My gratitude and appreciation goes to the all the staff and their top notch service. You have my loyalty and business!!!

the bad treatment we receive in this place where it is supposed to be an emergency hospital for pets, which I never imagined that they would treat us as badly as a lady name cat did So rude unacceptable 😡 The employee name cat was very arrogant and rude when she was talking to us she started walking backwards as if she got disgusted with us, as she was doing that she told me that they would not treat my puppy because she did not believe that he needed emergency attention and that if he did They wouldn’t take him in I less I’ll covered his face cause she was scare to get bitten I’m like what??? He is not going to bite you what are you talking about Than as she was leaving us standing there she said very sarcastically. Well sorry take him somewhere else !!! someone tell me why were were treated different I don’t understand there is blood 🩸 still coming out of his neck I don’t really know where to take him

AES is truly a special place. No one wants to have to take their pets into the hospital, but when I had a frightening situation with my kitten Sonny, we went to AES and received the best care. Dr. O'Hanlon is the best doctor I could have asked for in an emergency situation. He sprung into action to help treat my kitten and even after he had to be transferred to a 24-hour hospital, Dr. O'Hanlon still kept in touch via phone and email to make sure everything was ok. The staff along with Dr. O'Hanlon are always so kind and helpful when it came to my kitten. Really happy I found AES and highly recommend them to anyone else that finds themselves to be in a difficult situation.

I don't wish any pet owner to take their beloved fur-baby to an animal hospital but if you do, take them to AES in Kirkland. My cat, Baloo, was in discomfort Monday night and started urinating lots of blood. I called AES, and they were able to get me in right away. (Due to COVID, it has been incredibly difficult to see a vet, and even AES is operating on reduced hours). It was past midnight, and they took my cat in right away. He ended up needing surgery and had to stay at AES for 2.5 days. Throughout his hospital stay, the staff kept checking in with me - especially Dr. Tungseth was exceptionally kind and compassionate. Also, big shout out to Dr. Minamoto, Kelci, Paige, Laura (and all the other phenomenal people whose names I can't remember) who took their time to make Baloo feel comfortable. I could not be more grateful!!!
