How to Save Money at Sacajawea Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

***turns out that my cat had an enlarged heart and heart disease which could have been caught during this appointment since she was breathing rapidly but the vet decided that she didn't need an x-ray since her breathing has always been a little weird even though I asked. We had to put her down about 6 weeks after this. The receptionist was also snippy with me when we brought her in for a follow up after we spent $2500 at the emergency vet to save her life because I asked for quotes for euthanizing and she started with "well if you want your pet back" and I said "why wouldn't I want my pet back, that's why I'm asking" and she said "well some people don't want their pets back" kind of not the time to lose your patience as a professional. We brought our little kitties to this clinic last week for their yearly check up and we were very impressed with the staff. Everyone was so nice and professional and they handled our kitties with so much care. Sometimes it's hard to find a vet that you feel actually cares about your furry baby but I have no doubt they were in good hands here. The doctor also asked us very detailed questions about our cats and their health history which is more than my doctor has done for me so I feel confident in knowing we picked the right clinic

We cannot say enough good things about the staff here! They have taken care of my Maui and Twister like they were their own pups. When I moved an hour away, I decided it was worth the drive to continue to quality of care. They are kind, caring professionals who always make time to make sure my pups are well taken care of. My dog, Maui, loves everything here so much he gets excited to go inside! Thanks for everything you all do!!

I brought my sugar glider to this clinic for a neuter and was extremely impressed with their efficiency and knowledge about my animals. I let them know I had travelled from Olympia and was staying in the area until I could pick him up so they got him right in and I was home before any of the crazy Friday traffic. My glider had an extremely easy recovery. I would highly recommend this office and it will definitely be worth the trip if he needs needs any other kind of treatment.Dr Mason the exotic vet did a great job and I was super nervous.

It was our rabbit's first visit with Dr. Melissa Mason and the whole experience and visit was simply stress-free and amazing. This is our first experience with any vet. From start to finish, the front desk staff/phone staff are easy to contact. I did not have to sit on hold for very long. I was running very very late for our first appointment and they were so kind to work with me and see our pet despite being me being very late. Our visit with the assistants/techs went so smoothly; they were kind, patient and gentle with our rabbit. Dr. Mason was knowledgeable (with rabbits specifically), approachable and answered all our questions. I am so relieved and happy to have found Dr. Mason! Thank you so much!!!

Brought my dog in to have 2 fatty mass removed, got the estimate for removing both of the mass’ and a week later dropped him off in the morning for surgery, I work nights in an emergency room and they know I work nights and was going home to sleep. Around 11-am they had called and left a message asking if I want the second mass removed. I got the message too late because I was sleeping, did I mention I with nights well I do and it’s12 hr shifts so by the time I got the message at 3-pm the surgery was long over with and they only removed one mass, even though they quoted me for both and I approved both to be removed. The surgery cost a little over $1600.00 and when I picked him up they said, we tried to call you after I said it WAS supposed to be removed during the surgery. Her reply was that I could reschedule and have it removed at a later date… if they had done it during the surgery it was $200-something extra but to reschedule and pay for all surgical costs again is outrageous and another $1600. On top of the terrible service my dogs stomach looks like Frankenstein the way he was sutured up it was horrible, it’s not that hard to do similar to sewing but obviously the vet who did it must be new because the skin was tied in such a way that it scrunched up is the explanation I can give, I’ve only seen this kind of stitching on a Frankenstein movie. My dog came home with ear mites that he didn’t have when I dropped him off, they shaved him at the area of the second mass but they never took it out, and it was much smaller than the first one so it would have been so simple. The picture is his scar and horrible suture job, sutures have been removed. They were supposed to remove his sutures today and assess how he is doing but I was told the veterinarian is busy but one of the techs will do it, I walked out this is like going to see your doctor and they send out a nurses aid to assess you. Don’t go here, don’t trust them with your pet.
