How to Save Money at Community Pet Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my sister here with her German Sheppard who was hit by a car. The staff is amazing and explain everything so well. They were the least expensive that she could afford and definitely worth it. I will definitely be bringing my pets here when and if they need anything. I highly recommend!

If you need a general check up for you pet, I’m sure they would be good. But if you have an immediate health concern, I would not recommend going here. We brought in our pup on a Friday and got some testing done, got the results via email Saturday. No explanation of the results, just a referral with the results. After having to take our pup to the ER, we found out he was extremely dehydrated and would have passed if we didn’t bring him in right then! Would have been nice to know that instead of an informal email. We did get a call on Monday after we wrote an email, and we’re told they called another patients owners and explained our results to them. I feel that is extremely unprofessional and unorganized. Thank goodness we were proactive and took him to the ER, otherwise, they would be responsible for his passing with their inadequate follow up.

We had to take our elderly cat in for urgent care and we had a really good experience here. Intake was easy and quick. The staff asked really detailed and specific questions to help speed things up. The vet was thorough in their examination and spent a lot of time talking us through their assessment. And we found the prices for what we needed (some medication and the examination) to be reasonable. Their hours and days closed could be tricky but I completely understand staffing challenges right now. We are comforted in the fact these folks are right up the street and able to help our pet in a pinch.

I cannot speak to the quality of veterinary service but I can address the quality of the check in process and office staff professionalism. I understand the need for triage and safety in a clinic setting. I don't understand disrespect. I followed the instructions given to me over the phone when I arrived. I waited an hour in my car for the attendant to come out. Finally the office manager came out. Her attitude was offensive from the beginning. She was condescending and inferred that I was lying about the instructions I was given. She shielded her accusation by saying that I must have "misheard " the instructions. I did not sit in my car for an hour by mistake. She and her staff messed up. I suggest pet owners find a clinic where you are treated with respect and dignity. I don't know how to edit my previous review so I will add a second. It seems even more necessary now that I read the response to the first. I expected a wait. I always wait at your clinic. What I did not expect was the treatment I received from your staff. It was so disrespectful that I felt it necessary to open a google account so that I could post a review. This would not have been necessary if the office staff supervisor had allowed me to talk to her boss. When a customer service person infers that I am lying and then belittles me I take offense. That behavior reflects negatively on the entire business.

Other than the long wait times, I have been very pleased with the front desk as well as the vet techs and the Veterinarian I have seen. They care for the animals and have handled my dog with great care. Would recommend to anyone who needs more immediate help or can't get an appointment soon enough with their vet. I trust their diagnosis and treatment.
