How to Save Money at Arlington Pet Clinic, Steven Gowen, DVM

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been bringing my animals to this clinic for years & always been satisfied. However today was a horrible experience due to one employees. My dog was actively bleeding and in pain I told the tech that and she got bit when she tried to take her from my arms. One of the other techs came out and said that they could not treat my dog and did not offer alternative solutions. I asked to speak to the manager to see if they could help her if I put a muzzle on her or if they would help her at all. Meanwhile in the background the tech that originally told me they could not treat my dog was smiling/ smirking at me! I am worried about my dog and want her to get help and your employee is taking joy in turning us away! This interaction was the worst thing I could have experienced when I am actively seeking help from my injured dog. That employees lack of compassion makes me never want to go back if that is the type of person they hire!

Dr. Gowen and his staff (especially Theresa) are wonderful! I know that my furbabies are in the best of care. They have always treated my furbabies as if they were their own. They truly love all animals and are not in this business for the money and it shows in their compassion and their prices are much less than most clinics. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would.

I used to use this place all the time and they used to have good customer service...My mom made sure to be the first in line 7-21-23 they open at 9 and around 9:30 was told the vet was not there yet it's now 10 am and they are saying probably another 30-50 min to be out of there.....for an eye infection...there was a reason we needed to be seen early as we have to travel out of town at a certain time...then when I call to ask if the vet was in the clinic yet I was told he has been there since 9? So how many stories are they telling people? Was told it will be 30-50 min longer and either have patients or take the dog elsewhere and then was hung up on...they need some new people working there that actually care about time of others and their animals!

I have two rabbits, and one has dental problems that tend to cause her teeth to grow faster than average. I only take my girls in for the teeth trim and a nail trim. It seems that when I take my girl with dental problems in they find some kind of infection. Now, I am not an expert, however I know the signs of an infection in rabbits when I see it. They seem to try and weasel more money out of animal parents. There is a sweet receptionist there, but the rest of the staff just don’t have much of a friendly attitude. The same problem happens with our bearded dragons. They always seem to find something wrong when there have been no signs of illness. It’s kind of ridiculous. Edit- it doesn’t make up for my harsh words. I would like to apologize. I was very harsh in my judgment. When I was dealing with this there was a lot going on in my life and I took it out on people that didn’t deserve it. I was the textbook definition of a Karen. They were just trying to take care of their patients. New edit- my dad who was unrelated to this post tried to go in to get a test done and was turned away. My issue arose when they refused to tell me how much treatment for my rabbit was going to cost because apparently it’s against the law. Yet I did quite the extensive amount of research and spoke to other vets, and none of the heard of this law, and are more than happy to be transparent when it comes to treatment prices. Tried to tell me it was a fungus infection and both my rabbits needed to be treated. The rabbit that was seen died two weeks after being seen here. Her mom is happy and healthy, with no treatment for a so called “fungus infection.” If you have an exotic vet, look elsewhere. Edit #3- you can also see other reviews talking about how money hungry they are. You shouldn’t become a vet and work with animals if money is all you care about.
