How to Save Money at Burlington Emergency & Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We brought our black lab in on May 30, 2023. He had sliced his side wide open and required stitches and drainage tube. He received the best care from Burlington Emergency Vet. They were so busy that night and we went into the last exam room in the building. They were very responsive and gave him the best of care. Thank you for taking such good care of him

My wife and I rescue disabled pets. We have two amputee dogs, an amputee cat, and a couple more rescues. We have recently moved to the area and needed to have some emergency surgery as well as Neuro screening for a couple of our animals. And yes, it was expensive. But you get what you pay for, and that's a job well done, folks who truly love what they're doing, and peace of mind knowing our little pack is in good hands. The building is very nice, open, and easy to sit away from other people or animals in the waiting room. The front desk workers have always been kind, courteous, and helpful. The bathroom is clean and well stocked. And the parking lot is ready to find and navigate. As someone with disabilities, these are all important things to me. Thank you BEVS for the professional care you bring to our special needs animals, for being the kind of people our animals enjoy seeing, and for the peace of mind knowing our babies are in good hands.

We just wanted to say thank you so much for the wonderful care and love you gave our dog Sierra during her time there. I can’t say enough about how amazing everyone was and the great communication and compassion I felt from everyone. I want to give a special shout out to Maddie and Maya at the front desk, they went above and beyond to make a really tough night for me a little better. Also to Morgan, one of Sierra’s nurses, who I could really feel cared about Sierra and gave her the best care and lots of love. You all made a really traumatic experience a little easier just knowing that she was being so well taking care of and supported. It brings me some comfort knowing that we have this amazing facility with great people in case anything else goes wrong. Everyone was so friendly and kind. Thank you for being so awesome!! I also have to agree with other reviewers, think of this place like a human ER, it's not first come first serve, you are seen based on severity as well as what their current capacity is. Patience is key, you will have to wait (I was there for 5 hours). But just know they will make sure you pet is extremely well taken care of!

Our upstate NY vet recommended BEVS when our dog needed his ACL repaired. His surgery went great and he was back to running in the woods as expected. The whole experience was excellent. A few years later, he was diagnosed with lymphoma and acutely decompensated over the weekend. We brought him back to BEVS to end his suffering instead of waiting until Monday to try to get in with our vet. I can’t say enough about how kind and compassionate the staff were at BEVS. We bought that puppy right after we got engaged. He was our first baby and saying goodbye was incredibly hard. They were again so excellent.

If you’re from out of town and have a vet emergency, take your pet here. We were on vacation and one of our dogs must have gotten into something. She had GI issues and was very lethargic so I brought her to BEVS. They did X-rays and found a partial obstruction. She stayed overnight and got IV fluids and really great care. The entire staff was responsive and understanding. Everyone was incredibly professional and supportive and the facility was very clean.
