How to Save Money at West Mountain Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have nothing but great things to say about WMAH. From the phone call to the visit and all the in between I have always felt like we have gotten the best care. My experience has been with Dr. Bo and Dr. Linda. They are very thorough and knowledgeable and take the time to explain their findings and answer my questions. Every step of the way I feel the love the entire staff has for caring for our precious companions. Going above and beyond is what they do.

I sent my dog here after he got into a fight to get checked out to then get a doctor that did not fully check my dog out because I couldn’t come up with $400 for treatment to then get a solution that completely botched they stapled my dogs leg and missed a staple completely off the cut they missed punctures and cuts on him one that is now slightly infected would never send my dog back here again poor care about the animal themselves only about the money. Dr.Morris was the doctor who poorly took care of my dog

I have been going to West Mountain since the early 90's and have had consistent professional and courteous care for my pets. After relocating I had to choose another vet. Fast forward to 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic I was unable to get an appointment with my regular vet so chose to go back to West Mountain. My 15 old Springer Spaniel had a severe skin condition and it was not getting better despite trying many over the counter remedies. Dr. Sarah Blau was assigned to me and my pup. From day one she insinuated that I was some how responsible for this skin condition. For the next few months I had my son and wife go to the appointments to avoid what seemed like personality conflicts between Dr. Blau and myself. Unfortunately they received the same treatment. She was rude and the shaming continued. After a a few courses of antibiotics, some medicated shampoo, and a shot to stop the itching my pup did get some relief but the skin condition did not clear up. After 30 days when the shot was no longer effective he would start itching again. At the next visit I endured more insinuations that I was somehow at fault. She would reiterated her concern about my dogs wellbeing and how bad she felt for him. Ironically I had the same concerns which is why I was at the vet! After close to $2000 in vet bills in less than a year, expensive skin cultures, several courses of antibiotics targeted for his specific condition, he did not get better. Today I went for yet another follow-up and was told flat out, "I am borderline neglectful." This was extremely hurtful and more than I could endure. This dog grew up with my two boys and is part of our family. I picked up my pup and left. In hindsight I wish I could have endured a bit longer and voiced my true opinions of Dr. Blau. I am not sure if it is incompetence, lack of compassion, lack of character, or just poor bedside manner but Dr Sarah seems incapable of caring for my dog. Additionally no one in my household is willing to subject themselves to Dr. Sarah Blau's rhetoric going forward. We will be taking my old dog back to his former vet now that the pandemic has subsided some. Hopefully they will be able to keep him comfortable for a bit longer. I am not expecting miracles for a 15 year old dog but he deserves better. I think it is important to add that the rest of the staff at West Mountain has been wonderful. Caring, courteous, and professional. I would recommend West Mountain I would just steer clear of Dr. Blau.

I cant recommend this place enough. The staff is absolutely incredible and you can tell they truly care about the animals they take care of. I feel so comfortable and confident about the care my animals receive when they go to West Mountain. We have had our animals seen here for both routine and emergency care. The staff is always incredibly professional, knowledgeable and compassionate.
