How to Save Money at Coastal Animal Referral Emergency CARE

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We just moved to a new area last week and had not established vet care. One our four dogs experienced a medical emergency that required euthanasia. We were finally referred to Coastal Animal by the 3rd vet who could not help today. From the first call to the final goodbye everyone of their staff members provided the most compassionate care while explaining every detail. Not only was our Odie Boy treated with dignity and respect- we were as well. We have two daughters and the staff was extra considerate of them. Lastly, their facility is top notch, clean, and relaxing for such a difficult situation. They have considered every aspect of this difficult decision and task and have created an environment and service that offers compassion and understanding. Thank you to all of you who provide this excellent care!

The CARE Dr.’s & Staff took wonderful care of Duke our 5 yr. old miniature chocolate & tan piebald dachshund 4/28/23 - 5/1/23. We are thankful for their communication, care, concern, compassion & professionalism during our Duke Of Windsors - Dukey Do Do’s entire ER stay - diagnosis/treatment plan. Duke was our little sweet clown boy longdog who had a strut & swagger all of his own. Duke ended up passing away in the arms of one of the ER Vets. We are truly thankful he was not alone. We know they did everything they could do to help him. It was God’s timing to call him home to heaven where he is happy again & running pain free. We are an hour & 15 minutes away from their office in Williamsburg & recommend going there if you need an ER Vet Hospital for your fur baby. ❤️🐾🙏

I CANNOT express my gratitude towards this facility. They are HANDS DOWN, the most AMAZING facility I have ever brought my dog too. This is CAREs second time seeing Cooper within 6 months. When I called Friday night around 11:30pm they expressed genuine concern for my pet and said they were at max capacity and to try again early morning. I called them around 8:45 AM & they said to come straight here and they’ll see him. Upon him being evaluated, they were aware that finances are a huge concern as the bill had already estimated $1600 they worked with me for finances and got cooper diagnosed. They are now personally handling My dogs Plan of Action as we are in a time crunch and will be reaching out to me tomorrow. I can’t not recommend them enough to anyone. I seriously love them.

Last night was a night no pet owner ever dreams of. My husband had to make the rough choice to allow his dog to cross the rainbow bridge. The staff was amazing, patient, kind and caring. The lady who came out to get Libby was so compassionate and explained everything from start to finish as to what was happening. The vet Melissa Krause helped in understanding what was going on with Libby and helped guide him to make the right choice and what was best for Libby. We can’t thank this office enough for their compassion and understanding during this time.

I took my cat here from a vet referral. This establishment is seriously incredible. Everyone that works here is SO kind and welcoming. My cat needed something serious and the doctors were so helpful and thorough while talking through all the options. You’re able to call and get updates on your animal if you have to leave them for any reason. We ultimately had to put my cat down and while that is NEVER easy, Coastal Animal Referral Emergency Care made the process the most special goodbye that I could have asked for. Thank you to everyone who works here for taking such good care of animals and their owners.
