How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I'll start out by saying that Banfield was recommended to me. I thought I would have a good experience here but since day one I've felt uneasy about this place. I like how they have pet health plans and drop off services and the desk and doctor are always very kind. But I feel like they must be overwhelmed with all their patients, I feel like I have not been given very good service at times. My dog has had an ongoing ear infection as far as I am concerned for a while now and the ointment they gave me did not work, I tried to call there and left a message and call the doctor could suggest was continue to use the ear cleaner, now I'll say that that worked but since his follow up they told me to clean his ears once a week, at this point the infection is back. I am probably going to take him elsewhere, I am not going to waste my money or time again for them not to pinpoint why he keeps getting ear infections. I also feel like they really push treatments on me here, last time I was here they really pushed cytopoint on me, but after my dogs last injection I felt it did not do much, I told someone that from the get go, but obviously someone did not get the message or something. I could go on and on about other issues I have with place, but I'll just leave it at this. I feel like they have done nothing to help my dog, and I won't be returning. Honestly I wish I could get my money back for every visit. I certainly would not recommend this place.

Banfield is always a great experience. They treat my Bernese mountain dog with lots of love! They seem to have a good system for patient management, I never spend long waiting for them to call my pup back.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS PLACE FOR YOUR PETS! I have been trying to get my dog in to see a Veterinarian for an ear infection for over a week and got put on a waiting list because they are understaffed and have only one Vet because the other one is on maternity leave. They knew this situation would affect the clients and they DO NOT CARE! STILL WAITING! I emailed corporate and spoke to the office manager at this location and she was so rude! In order to opt out of my wellness plan I have to pay off the balance! THIS COMPANY DOES NOT CARE! Hippocritcal company! I strongly suggest that you really do your homework before using this company! I will be seeking a new Veterinarian!

If I could rate this in the negative stars I would. The service is absolutely terrible. The reason why is they are under staffed and telling customers that they need to be put on a waiting list for services for pets in need. Find staff or whatever you have to do. The management is rude. I don't trust them with the safety of my pets. I wouldn't trust them with anyone else's either. They need better training and better staff ASAP! Further more they replied to this with some bot that claims to be the owner? That's just comical. Let me let you know I will be escalating my complaints to the highest level possible. How do you tell people to just go to any vet? Because you don't have staff. I pay for a wellness plan through your company. I'm pretty sure you have a contract with pet smart. It's just disappointing to see you treat my pets and my family this way. My pet was in need of services and was denied that because one of your staff members is not available? I'm just baffled by this. There's only 1 member of your staff that can take care of pets? What's going on at this location? Many pets are dropped off all the time and just left in crates never being taken of. It's a strange way of doing things. Then your staff is terribly rude to customers. Why refer me to just any vet? Do you not want my business? I'm very confused. Simply put I don't think I want to deal with any business that treats people and their pets that way. Then some fake bot person that claims to be the owner tells us to put it on Facebook?? I'm still confused with this entire process. I recommend anyone that has a bad experience complain directly to their store corporate. Then maybe something will be done.

Unfortunately, our family will not be returning to this Banfield location. I do not trust this location with the health and well-being of our dog anymore. I wrote an e-mail to Banfield's Customer Care department the Monday after our final encounter with this Banfield location and have not received any acknowledgement. We have been Banfield Optimum Wellness Plan members for almost all of Bailey's 15-year life and we have never been treated so poorly. A few weeks ago (February 11th) our dog Bailey had a (somewhat) life threatening emergency. Bailey had swallowed an object and although he could breathe, he was struggling to clear this object on his own and was starting to panic. I called our local Banfield clinic (Williamsburg, VA) hoping we would be able to receive care but was turned away. The tech I spoke with said that the doctor was busy but they wanted us to send a video of our dog choking and they would call me back "when they could get to him". I asked if there was even a tech available to do something to help and was denied. In all our years of care with Banfield we have never received such a lack of care and compassion in a stressful time. I opted to take Bailey to another vet facility where he received exceptional and expedited care. The doctor that saw him there said that if the object had slipped or moved farther down, there was a very good chance we would have had a much darker outcome to the situation. I am disappointed how this situation was handled, and I hope no other family has to experience what we experienced.
