How to Save Money at Reston Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Really respectful team who did not pass judgement. I took my cat in because she was having bowel issues. The team was able to assess the situation, prescribe some medication, and injected her with fluids because she was a little dehydrated. Within a few hours she was back at it. Lively, cuddling, and looking for her next meal. Truly grateful for the Reston Animal Hospital for quickly getting my kitty well.

Thank you Dr Miller for your kindness and for allowing myself and a few others to install new flooring at the hospital. I hope you continue to be satisfied with the work and enjoy the new look. Bruno, my Cane Corso is sure to be happy next week when he comes to visit and gets his check up. I highly recommend the Reston Animal Hospital for all of your pet care needs. Excellent staff, excellent service with patient loving care 💯

If I could give negative stars, I definitely would. Brought my dog here for a check up on his ear which was infected. First doctor came out and told me it was infected and I could either get ear drops and put them in myself or he could use a tool that goes deep into the ear canal and apply medication that way but it was obviously more expensive but he guaranteed it would clear up the infection, so I chose that. First visit was $350. Two weeks later my dog is scratching his ear again so I take him back. Second visit the doctor prescribed antibiotics and did a deep ear cleaning. Then once they came out and asked for my card (which I transferred about $400 to prior to the visit because I knew it shouldn’t be more than that for a follow up), they never told me they added a bunch of services that I never asked for and go back in to swipe it. Come back out and say that there is a remaining balance of almost $400… FOR A FOLLOW UP ON AN ISSUE THEY NEVER FIXED!!!! I have never been more angry and disgusted by a business. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE!!!

My dog had an emergency yesterday, I just moved here and this was the closest vet. The staff here is great. I arrived when they were about to close, but everyone was amazingly attentive and they treated my dog right away! They really care about your pet. Dr. Victoria Cracas was a life saver. She was able to immediately diagnose my dog, Bear, and got straight to the point-- with honest and thoughtful recommendations for treatment options. Her diagnosis was on point and treatment has been effective. They were upfront about the cost, and it was also reasonably priced. This is definitely my new go-to veterinarian / animal hospital. Thank you so much Reston Animal Hospital!!

They charge for things without asking you first or telling you that is what they’re doing and you are not allowed in so there is no way of telling if they are really doing what they say. I would trust something like this just because I otherwise wouldn’t have any reason not to but the fact that I took my pet to his first appointment for an issue and told he was guaranteed to be healed and his meds were GUARANTEED to work for 30 days. 2 weeks later I was having the same issue so I called back and they scheduled me for a follow up which was $500 more than the original appointment and they didn’t even tell me the charges until they swiped my card and I had a remaining balance to pay. TAKE YOUR PET ELSEWHERE!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
