How to Save Money at Powhatan Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my pit Piglet in to see Dr. Mead. I really loves the way she treats my dogs and talk to me. She listens to my issues and concerns. Give me her thoughts and take of the matter. I first met her, when I brought in my DEAF pit Delilah. She was so amazing and loving to her. She and the nurse even did hand signs to her during her visit. By doing something so minor like that, made Delilah visit much better and kept her calm. She is the only one I want to see and deal with my babies. I had have bad incidents with others there. I can not think of the nurse tech that helped her that day. But, she is amazing also and her loving care to my dogs. She even remembered my Delilah (RIP). The front desk staff is always kind and so welcoming when I enter with my dogs. I do recommend this office to others. My bad experiences with other vets Dr's there. May not be theirs and their pets.

Was in to have my 16 yr old poodles nails trimmed and was told I would not be able to have her nails trimmed again until I brought her in for a ck up and shots. It’s only been a few months since her ck up. Poor service is a reason people put off taking their dogs to the vet in the first place.

My dog got a 6” x 3” wound and called to get her in to be treated. They told me all the doctors were in a meeting and they were unable to treat my dog. Thats right. Must have been a really important meeting! So I now have a new vet down the street that was willing to help.

We went here to see what was wrong with our shepherd Molly and they told us we needed to get x-rays because they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her. They wanted us to go to their sister store that was 40 minutes away but we needed her looked at asap, so we went to river run and they got upset and never followed up with us after that and mind you we spent SO MUCH money there for her but im glad we went to river run because they had to do emergency surgery on her and when they started it, they found out she had a huge tumor and had to be put down :( I recommend river run for everyone because they took care of us and did everything they could. don’t waste ur money here.

I have been with PAH for 25 years. They have taken care of my own pets and ones I have taken in to rescue. They have always been amazing and have worked with me knowing that I have made a contribution to the community. I've never had a problem except the last couple years. It's a shame that an animal hospital that's mission was to make it affordable to take care of our pets is no longer. I spoke with the office manager Kendra, asking for help with litters of kittens and cats that I was trying to help with vetting, spay & neuters at an affordable cost, but I guess it wasn't important enough for her to get back with me. I called & wrote several times. Its so disappointing that this hospital has gone downhill. She never even got back with me after I asked several times for help. Unacceptable. Such a shame. ** Update, it's been 2 weeks since your response you would look into this & I have not heard from you.....
