How to Save Money at Ghent Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Ghent Vet has taken care of my sweet dog since I rescued her almost seven years ago. The compassionate care we receive at Ghent Vet surpasses any experience I’ve had with previous vets. Agnes and I are treated with kindness every moment we are there. And they always follow up after each visit to see how Agnes is doing. If you are looking for the most wonderful veterinarians in the world, go to Ghent Vet!

I’m a very nervous cat mom, it can be so hard getting cats to the vet. But the whole process and my visit there was very great and I’ll definitely be back. My appointment was very quick, everyone I spoke with was very kind, and I thought it was very reasonably priced.

I adopted my boys 5 & 6 years ago from Norfolk Animal Care Center. From the moment I took them home, I knew Ghent Vet would be our primary care provider. I'd never visited their office before, but that didn't matter. Over the years I'd heard nothing but glowing reviews. Six years later, I wouldn't think of taking them anywhere else. How are they different from other vets? The biggest thing is it's a personalized experience. Other vet clinics feel more like an assembly line. You enter and there's havoc - several pets in the lobby and owners waiting in line to ask questions or pay. Not only that but the doctors appear rushed and haven't the time to listen and ask questions. I've experienced that at other vets, but not at Ghent. At Ghent Vet, there have been few times when I've arrived for an appt to see multiple patrons in the waiting area. This isn't because they're not busy, but instead because they 1) show you almost immediately to a room (and ask you if you'd like something to drink!) and 2) respectfully space out their appointments. And the most important of all is that the doctors take their time. My most recent appt with Dr. Coplen (who I see most often) was an absolute pleasure. She gave both my boys a thorough exam, while at the same time providing them with plenty of good rubbins and compliments. We spent several minutes discussing the boys' well-being and at no point did she seem like I was stealing her time from other patients. Once the boys were good to go, I paid for their visit in the exam room and took them home, with happy bellies (Churus are the best). Bottom line - Ghent Vet is a sparkling clean and centrally located animal hospital, ran by dedicated and highly experienced individuals. Whether it be a yearly checkup or a major illness/injury, they've got you covered. And for those concerned about cost - the prices are comparable to others in the area. I've never experienced price gouging. You're in good hands here and so are your babies.

Ghent Veterinary Hospital is one of the best vets I have ever been to. We started going to them a year ago after receiving conflicting information from a different vet in the area and we wanted a second opinion, since then they have become our main vet. They are incredibly kind, patient, and thorough in their examinations. You can tell that the staff really cares about what they are doing. When you walk in 9 times out of 10 a room is already ready and available for you which makes the whole process much less stressful on your pet. You also pay for the services inside the examination room so you aren't waiting out in a waiting room with a million other pets. We recently had to put down our senior dog and the staff was incredibly considerate and compassionate during the whole experience. They go above and beyond at all times. We have 2 cats, and feel so safe and secure with them as our vet. We know that our animals are getting the highest quality of care.

Took my puppy Daisy here after she was having some stomach issues. The staff treated her like royalty. They made her feel welcome and you can tell the vet and vet assistant are knowledgeable. They were upfront and knew exactly what she needed. I haven’t been to a vet like this before. We will be taking Daisy here for everything. I couldn’t recommend them enough. Thanks to the staff for getting us an appointment on such short notice.
