How to Save Money at Staunton River Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We live an hour away and could not imagine having any other vet! Whether home visits or coming to your office, you have the most amazing and caring staff. Thank you for everything you all did for Scrappy Dog and our family yesterday. You all have the biggest hearts ever and we appreciate that so much. Losing our Scrappy Dog is heartbreaking but we are so thankful to have had you there helping him (and us). Bless you all for the love, healing and comfort you give.

It is with heavy heart that I write this review. I have been bringing my dogs to SRVC for over four years. During that time, even during COVID, I was happy and satisfied with Dr. Turnbull and Dr. Steins knowledge, compassion and professionalism. I was constantly recommending SRVC to people looking for a Veterinary Service. I am not a panic type dog owner who calls in frantically when ever one of my pets are off. My dogs and I are always respectful, on time and I pay my bill when we do have an appointment. Recently one of my dogs sustained an injury to her leg. Of course it took place on a Friday late afternoon. I went on the SRVC web site and requested an appointment. I’m a realist and didn’t expect an immediate reply but thought I’d hear something. I made my pup as comfortable as possible and waited out the stressful weekend. She was in extreme discomfort and when Monday morning arrived, with no response from SRVC by late morning, I called the office. I was greeted with an answering machine. I left a message indicating what we were experiencing and requesting a call back to make an appointment per the instructions on their answering machine. When several hours passed with no call from SRVC and my growing concern for my dogs health and comfort, I called the office again. The call was answered by an unidentified lady. I explained my situation with my dog and she informed me there were no openings. This individual then informed me I could call in the morning to get on the sick call list but then she told me that list is already full and it would be several days before I could bring my injured dog in. When I questioned her and protested to this treatment she said “this is a clinic”. I’m not even sure what she meant by that. Apparently SRVC now only handles appointments only and if your pet has an accident, you are on your own. Confused as to what to do I hung up. I actually was thinking I’d get a call back with an appointment, because I was a dedicated customer with patients who have history with SRVC. Again, that call never came. I called back again and expressed my disappointment. I stated I may have to take my dogs to another Veterinary “Clinic” and this individual, who is the same person I talked to earlier, said “OK”. That was it. There was zero concern for the well being of my dog or zero interest in maintaining me as a customer. Because of the flip answer I asked to get my dogs records, which she had ready when I went to pick them up. She handed them to me without a word. I took my dog to the Urgent Care Facility in Lynchburg. They were extremely professional and helpful like SRVC use to be. I know SRVC isn’t a hospital and in the end my dog didn't require a hospital, thankfully. My dog was injured and in pain and needed a professional to put both animal and owner at ease. Staunton River Veterinary “Clinic” didn't care.

The vet was very nice and explained everything to us. Our puppy was behind on shots and she wasn't going to push them on us since it was our first time there but I asked about them and she replied with I didn't want to push that on you. I thought that was very considerate of her.

Best veterinary office ever. Always friendly. Dr. Carrie and Dr. Jessica are amazing. Both are SO friendly, knowledgeable, and just total rockstars. They're always upfront about cost. I've never been surprised by anything because it's always been told to me upfront. I can't say enough good things. We've been coming for a year now and you definitely have lifelong patients with our pets.
