How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Great staff and very accommodating to our schedule for health visits and vaccines. We have an annual plan and they contact me when we are due for more vaccines and wellness checks. They offer drop off or in person appointments. My puppy walks right in, enjoys the attention and leaves with everything we need for a healthy little dog!

We took our beloved cat, Ricki, here due to an urgent health situation. I was pleased with the interactions with Dr. Moss (the vet I spoke to) and Wes (the front desk employee who checked us in). I felt as though Dr. Moss was attentive to any questions.

I am rating Banfield Pet Hospital in Gainesville VA! The staff called me 3-4 times this week 9/9/2024 to confirm my appointment time. When I said showed up after standing in line for 30 minutes, they tell me my appointment time was 2:00PM. I have been through this before with Banfield. This is not the first time that they get the schedule mixed up and then say they can’t take you really disappointed they are short staffed and pet parents have too many questions like I usually do after the appointments and before one person is trying to handle it all. Really disappointed in Banfield today think twice before you join.

We took our sweet girl Rookie here for her final appointment. We’d seen Dr. Moss previously at another location at a critical time with Rookie, and he made time in his full schedule at his Gainesville office to help us say goodbye to her. Dr. Moss spoke frankly and realistically with me regarding our options for Rookie, and he and his staff offered us great compassion and professionalism during an incredibly difficult time. We live in DC, and found traveling the distance well worth the trip for the care we received. We will be making this our Banfield office of choice for our other senior dog.

Highly disappointed with this location… We started our dog on the basic dog plan not even a month ago. We were initially told that all initial vaccines and boosters are included. Mind you, we were advised this multiple times by multiple different employees. His appointment that day was supposed to be around $250 and when the doc called to provide an update the cost had somehow someway totaled up to around $600. I told the doctor we are not following through with whatever it was he was suggesting due to the initial cost that we were planning on paying being SIGNIFICANTLY lower than what they were trying to raise it to. After that, the doctor kept trying to push a neuter on us which we were also not wanting to do & did not follow through with. 3 weeks later we took him in for his booster shots and were told that those are not covered under his plan. I explained that I was told multiple times by multiple employees that they were covered under the plan. The woman stepped off to speak with manager who said they can’t do anything about it and they apologize as a lot of their employees are new and I was given misinformation. I insisted on speaking with the manager who was then too busy to speak on the phone and all of a sudden ready to waive any further booster costs for our dog… upon picking up our dog from that visit they had added on an anxiety medication since he was apparently all over the place during his visits. They said the doctor is recommending the meds to keep him calm during his visits. At that point, we were already taking him home so the point of suggesting that medication (additional $114) I have no clue… Another thing we noticed upon picking up our dog on both occasions was that he was severely out of breath. Excitement I understand, but this was as if he was dehydrated or parched. Each time we brought him into the house he would drink 2-3 bowls of water. I’m not sure what these employees are doing to ensure the animals are taken care of when they’re dropped off. My fiancé and I feel very uneasy with this location and it has been nothing but issues and confusion since the first visit. We are always feeling like we’re being persuaded into adding additional things onto our tab as if their main concern is money. It seems as though no one is on the same page. Not a good first impression and it makes us want to move to another location for our pets further needs.
