How to Save Money at Ridgewood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve been to numerous vets in the area. Ridgewood is top notch. My family had to put our sweet young dog down. Not only was the staff amazing, they cared for her like a child. Several weeks after the dreadful day, we get a card in the mail with heart felt notes from all the staff. Impressed, is an understatement. Thank you all for everything.

Great animal hospital. Took care of my westie's stomach problems and she is now l5 years old and my new puppy goes there and we love Dr. Lane. Friendly staff and very eager to make sure you are happy with results from your visit. Always happy to see your pet. A trusting vet hospital. You can rely on what they say. I do and its always been right. Thank you, Ridgewood vets and staff.

The care team at Ridgewood Animal Hospital always offers compassionate customer service while providing an excellent standard of care for our furry friends. At our last visit, they went above and beyond to ensure that my service dog was ready for her first visit out of the country. Thanks to their due diligence, everything was smooth sailing!

I spent from 2015 to November 25, 2022 attending Ridgewood for my Annabelle’s routine visits and her chronic ear infections. While my last visit will be my most memorable it is not to be overshadowed by the first visit. We saw Dr. Lane and Annabelle has always been very shy around strangers and men. He and his vet tech at the time managed to get a kiss or two out of her with their patience and kindness. Fast forward to our last visit where I had to make the difficult decision to put Annabelle down he and his teams compassion will forever be remembered. I know I’m not special this is how they treat everyone during this type of visit. They took us right to the room, walked me through everything, and when it was time Dr. Lane and the female assistant with him sat with me and most importantly loved on Annabelle with me. When I came in to pickup her she’s and paw print yesterday it was packaged in a beautiful bag and as the front desk agent handed the bag over she said, “Here’s your sweet girl back” I think I made it to the door before breaking down. It’s not just how they are wonderful with our furry loved ones. It’s how they are throughout the entire process. I recommend them to everyone I know and if I ever get another fur baby I will be back. Thank you Ridgewood for your compassion and empathy through the last seven years. From day 1 until the last ride. Krysta

We have been taking our 3 pets here for several years and always had great experiences with Dr. Lane. Recently we have been getting Dr. Rossner and it seems like every time there are issues. Our small dog is a little crazy and takes some time to warm up to people, when we told them this they still just reached down to grab her and were shocked when the dog barked and acted mean (she is all bark and no bite at 17 lbs). Our larger dog has had seperation anxiety since we first got him as a puppy and during all of his puppy visits he did great at the vet because they would do everything right in the exam room with me or my Fiance there (shots, blood draws, etc) but recently they have been taking him to the back for these tasks and struggling every time. I told them he has seperation anxiety and it would help if they could do it with me there. Dr Rossner told me this was more than anxiety and he has handling issues. She suggested cbd oil and handling training because he wouldnt let them touch him. He lets us touch him fine. I have never seen him act up from anybody touching him when we are around and I personally can grab or hold him anywhere without issue so I cant see how this is a dog training issue. I love the facility and as I said before Dr. Lane has given us nothing but positive experiences but it is really a jab when one of the vets wont listen to the owners advice on how to better treat their dog. We are strongly considering other vets at this point.
