How to Save Money at Cooke Veterinary Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

After being at another local vet for almost 8 years, it was a breath of fresh air to come to this establishment. At our old vet we would wait in the front waiting area for well over 1/2 an hour past our appointment time, everytime. At Cooke, that is not the case. As soon as you check in at the front you are brought straight back to the exam room, no wait! We will continue to refer people to this vet as we are so happy with the services received.

We unfortunately found Cooke Vet Center after our dogs cancer diagnosis. The staff was kind and professional until the end of our big guys life. Dr. Edson is not only knowledgeable but passionate about helping all animals enjpy every moment they have. Dr. Ives was with us on his last day and gave us all the time we needed to say goodbye. Lisa-Marie was compassionate, gentle, and loving to our beautiful boy. Once he was gone she took great care in capturing a clay impression of his paw and gathering a lock of hair. This snall act allows us to always have a part of him nearby. I also would like to call out Kim who is a wonderful front desk associate and always brightens your day no matter how dark it is. I wish we had found them sooner so our dog could've benifitted from their care for years instead of months.

We had to make a very difficult decision for our elderly Miniature Schnauzer. With various continuing medical conditions and quality of life concerns, Dr. Cronin and the staff at Cooke veterinary explained our options and treatments that were available. We ultimately had to make the hard decision to euthanize. The respect and dignity Dr. Cronin and staff showed our pet and us was truly a blessing. After our difficult decision Cooke Vet. handled all the details, making sure our loved pet was honored. I cannot recommend this clinic enough. Truly a professional business.

The entire staff and all of the doctors at Cooke are amazing. I’ve been going there for 6.5 years with my pug (lots of vet visits!!) and they are the absolute best. My pug has seen many of the vets there for all kinds of appointments/concerns over the years in addition to the usual shots/checkups - eyes, ears, stomach problems, dental cleanings/broken tooth, and allergies. I’ve never had a problem getting an appointment in a reasonable amount of time & I never feel rushed through appointments either. Every person there treats their patients like family members of their own & I trust them wholeheartedly. I can’t recommend Cooke Veterinary enough!

I called this morning looking for an emergency vet for my senior rottweiler. Within 90 minutes I was in. I received terrible news but my experience was wonderful. I have not stopped crying but needed to make this review. From the front desk helping get me in, thank you. The interning vet assistant Lisa who started by cleaning up my laias' mess from being scared then listening to me speak through tears. Dr. Cooke....what a blessing to have met her today. She has made this moment in my life bearable. Her explained patiently everything to me and she even hugged me before I left which very much was needed. I know she was incredibly busy but never felt rushed. I was never pushed in any direction. The sole concern was Laia. I dont feel taken advantage of finanacially which honestly, does matter too . Every person I came in contact with there showed me compassion. I can't express enough how much it mattered to me. Thank you.
