How to Save Money at Greenbrier Emergency Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If I could give zero stars I would. I will start this by saying this review is purely just over a phone interaction with their staff. Before calling Greenbrier I contacted Verona Emergency Animal Hospital, where I was told “this is very serious and your kitten needs to be seen within 2 hours, we are about to go into emergency surgery, call Greenbrier and see if you can get in with them sooner than us and if they say 4-6 hours which they probably will, call us back and we will make it happen for you to be seen” WELP I should’ve just said oh my gosh you’re amazing and sweet for even being realistic and upfront with me I want you guys to do it no matter how long I have to wait. But instead I called Greenbrier like she said and spoke to a woman who clearly did not care about my situation. She first put me on hold for about 8 minutes while she “checked with the doctor”. Doctor wasn’t busy but she did want to let me know that could change and would likely be a 4-6 hour wait. What a coincidence that the other hospital had a feeling they would say this… almost like it’s happened before. She was rude and had zero empathy on the phone. Anyways. I’m glad she said no because Verona held their word and squeezed us in ASAP. Numbed our kittens eye and sedated him so he would be comfortable while he waited. My sister in law is a veterinarian who has elaborated to me countless times the unrealistic and very vulnerable state people go into when emergencies with their pets arise. I would never expect special treatment or to skip a line but to give me the absolute worst time line (when there isn’t anyone else in line) is insane, she did nothing to calm my worry. Will absolutely never go back to Greenbrier and will never send anyone there.

My cat had to stay overnight after being hit by a car and sustaining internal injuries. I knew I couldn’t be up every few hours to make sure his kidneys were flushed with fluids so I was so happy that Greenbrier had overnight hours. The doctor was present and so attentive and sensitive, and made me feel like he was in good hands. The staff were all very sweet and put me at ease. They took a complimentary ultrasound just to check on things in the morning which I appreciated. Thank you!!!

Last week my elderly dog Bolt (16 years plus) collapsed in the evening and would not/could not get up and seemed to be in pain. We knew the end was coming since he was barely eating anything, moving very stiffly and becoming more confused. I called Greenbrier and told the staff I felt certain it was time to say goodbye and it would be wrong to try and wait until our regular vet opened in the morning. They let me know they would need to examine him first, but assured me they would not put him through any excessive measures. When we arrived, staff carried him from the car and after examining him came back out to bring us in to be with our dog as we said goodbye. The staff at every step of the way, including the front desk which was fielding other calls was very respectful and compassionate. The vet made certain to explain what our dog's last moments would look like and gave us as much time as we needed to stay with our dog after he passed, despite this being an emergency facility. While I wish I knew every staff person's name from that night, I want to especially thank Maggie and Dr. Antonucci for the comfort they provided during a very difficult time. Finally, this was our second positive experience at Greenbrier. Last year our same dog became sick and then dehydrated requiring an IV continuing throughout the night. Our regular vet recommended we take our dog to Greenbrier for overnight monitoring. Greenbrier gave our dog excellent and compassionate care at that time too. We have another elderly dog and take comfort knowing that Greenbrier is close by should we need them again.

My two cats and I appreciate Greenbrier Animal Hospital so much. It relieves so much worry to know that there is always a vet available, even in the middle of the night, on a weekend, or on a holiday. I always wondered what I would do if something happened to one of my cats after hours, and when something did, Greenbrier was there for us; promptly, transparently, and with compassion. I highly recommend them if you don’t know where else to turn. We are so lucky to have an overnight emergency vet in the area, and the staff and service couldn’t be better.

After being turned away at all our local emergency vets due to high patient volumes, we made the hour long drive to Greenbrier. They not only took and cared for my dog, Baker, but made sure I felt comfortable leaving him over night. They never invalidated me or made me feel silly for being scared. They told me I could call as often as I wanted and whenever I did call, they gave me a full run down on his health, activities, and their interactions with him. HUGE thank you to the caring and empathetic staff who took the time to take care of the hysterical mom (me) along with my best friend!
