How to Save Money at VEG ER for Pets
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We brought our 8-year-old german shepherd, Ali, in for abdominal issues and he needed emergency surgery. Dr. Shah and all the other doctors were completely transparent throughout the entire process - from the cost of all aspects of care to the best/worst outcomes for every procedure. I never had to find someone to get an update. If a machine beeped, they were right on top of it. If Ali moved or seemed uncomfortable, they were at his side. I never felt like a burden being there with my dog while they worked diligently on him. They gave me as much attention and care as they gave Ali, but I never felt watched. Unfortunately, Ali's condition worsened, and we had to make the difficult decision to let him go. Everyone was patient and gentle with us while my family and I grieved. We were allowed as much time as we needed and offered whatever we needed. Water, tissues, blankets, a mat so I could lay on the floor next to Ali. I felt so seen during this very traumatic event. Ali wasn't just a dog he was family. The doctors understood that. Ali was our protector and a huge piece of my father, who also recently passed. I am very glad that VEG ER Alexandria was the one place that was able to get us in, and they will be my go-to for emergency vet care in the future.

I want to express my gratitude to the team at VEG Alexandra, my experience has been outstanding from my initial emergency call close to midnight to our departure. I had called 3 other 24hr emergency vets in the area and was turned away because they were short staffed even after expressing extreme concern with our dog being in labor and having complication. Dr. Cunningham, her team: Adam, Sam, Angie and Mena provide prompt medical attention as soon as we walked in. Dr. Cunningham was transparent, walked us through process and created an acting plan to help our girl, Mia. The professionalism, compassion and care everyone showed us during moments of anguish made us feel at ease, cared for and we knew Mia was in great hands, her safety was priority. I highly recommend VEG Alexandrea to anyone looking for an attentive emergency VET that genuinely cares for all, THANK YOU!!

I brought my Shiba Inu in on a Saturday morning and they were able to see him right away. They’re open 24/7 and the space is clean, comfortable and comforting for both parents and pets. They offer coffee/tea/snacks. They even offer toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and hair ties in the bathroom! The private rooms are comfortable with a sofa, rug, and it’s spacious. The staff, nurses and doctors were so nice, patient, and understanding.

I had to bring my dog Otto in for an emergency visit, and the experience was truly outstanding from start to finish. Dr. Shah was AMAZING, so patient with my accent and understanding when I didn’t know the English names of Otto’s medications. He was also incredibly kind and gentle with Otto, which made me feel so much more at ease. The facility was very clean, the service was fast, and everyone—from triage to discharge—was genuinely kind and professional. Thank you so much for taking such good care of Otto! Gracias mil amigos.

Dr. Griffin is and the staff are amazing. They are angel’s on earth. It’s nice you enjoy the complementary snack while waiting for your pet. The fact that they let me watch the whole procedure made me comfortable and give them all my trust. Thank you for saving my baby.
