How to Save Money at Toebeans & Tails Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot recommend Toebeans and Tails enough! From the moment we walked through the door, every single person on their team has been so warm, welcoming, and genuinely caring. As a new puppy parent, I was nervous about making sure she was comfortable at the vet, but the staff here has gone above and beyond to put both of us at ease. They are incredibly gentle with her, always take their time to explain everything to me, and never make us feel rushed. You can tell how much they love animals by the way they talk to her and handle her with so much patience and kindness. It gives me such peace of mind knowing my puppy is not only getting excellent medical care, but also being treated like she’s part of their family. I’m so grateful to have found a place where the whole staff is truly invested in her well-being and happiness. Toebeans and Tails is the kind of vet every pet owner hopes to find!

From the moment we walked in with my cat Rocket, the level of care and professionalism was outstanding. Dr. Wilson was incredibly compassionate—not just towards Rocket, but also towards me. They took the time to thoroughly explain all of our treatment options, which made me feel informed and confident about the decisions we were making for Rocket’s health.A special shoutout to Joan, the vet assistant, who was with us every step of the way. She patiently answered every question we had (and we had a lot!) with kindness and clarity. Her care and attention made a stressful situation feel so much more manageable. The entire team made us feel like Rocket was in the best hands possible. I would intensely recommend Toebeans and Tails to any pet owner looking for a practice that truly cares. Thank you again for everything!

I want to encourage everyone who is looking for a vet or thinking about switching vets to try Toebeans & Tails Veterinary Hospital in Alexandria. I have owned special needs English Bulldogs for years and have dealt with all kinds of health issues with my dogs. I have tried several of the local practices. I had not found that "animal whisperer" until I met Dr. Wilson. She is by far the most knowledgeable vet I have seen in the DMV (and I have seen quite a few). Dr. Wilson exudes the kind of confidence that comes from the wealth of knowledge that she possesses. On a personal note, Dr. Wilson is quite personable. Toebeans and Tails opened their doors just a few months ago. With your help, they'll succeed in providing quality care to our furry friends. Thank you for your consideration.

I can’t express the relief I have felt since bringing my cat Pepper to Dr. Wilson and her staff. I have finally found a place I can trust. If you are looking for someone to truly care about your pet and recommend thoughtful treatment, come to Toebeans and Tails. The same issues that other vets brushed off, Dr. Wilson really noticed. Where I’ve been rushed through other offices, T&T has taken their time. She researched the best treatments and explained them clearly - not just sending me with an expensive and unclear plan. She and her staff CARE, and have the knowledge to go with that compassion. // I moved to VA two weeks ago and knew my first priority had to be finding a vet I could trust. I had lost so much faith in vets after my cat Lola passed earlier this year. She was ‘healthy’ at her annual check up, but I’d spend the next two months watching her rapidly decline, taking her for daily treatments, going to 3 different vets, and ultimately saying goodbye when cancer was identified on multiple organs during her *second* ultrasound. I was terrified to go through it again with Pepper, who at the same time had abnormal lab results but no clear cause or treatment plan. I felt helpless and didn’t know where to go. // While Pepper’s treatment and diagnosis is still in progress, it honestly brings me to tears knowing that I no longer have to worry about where to go for compassionate, knowledgeable, and thoughtful care. After only two visits I can’t imagine going anywhere else.

Dr. Wilson is extremely knowledgeable, compassionate, and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my dog's medical care. From the moment I walked into the hospital I was greeted kindly by the staff and checked in promptly for our appointment. Dr. Wilson took the time to answer all my questions and put my worries at ease. I’m so happy to have found such a wonderful veterinarian that I can trust and more importantly my dog trusts.
