How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff hasn't been all that nice the last few times we've had to call or come in. We also have a wellness plan with them and everytime we take our pup there, the plan doesn't 'cover' something we need done. We pay a nice chunk every month and end up paying more when we go there anyway. They also make it super hard for you to cancel your plan and make sure you have a big balance to pay in order for you to close the account. We used to be happy with this place, but it hasn't been the best the last couple years.

DO NOT EUTHANIZE YOUR PET HERE! This location was so unprofessional, and deciding to end my dog’s life with them was a mistake. We told the woman to be gentle with my dog because she was prone to heart attacks, and while they were putting in the catheter we overhear them being so rough with her (my dog was screaming for a few min because she was under distress and we could hear the nurses annoyed with her!) that she has a heart attack and practically is dead by the time they brought her back in and did NOT seem apologetic AT ALL. The staff was so negligent with my dog during her last moments. Lastly, we asked for her ink paw prints and we get THIS three weeks later. You can not even make out the print. It’s so faded. How unprofessional. DID THE NURSE EVEN TRY? Choosing this location was an absolute joke. This staff is careless and I cannot believe this was how letting my childhood pet went. Their neglect was noticed by several people. I will be taking this further if possible because this was not okay.

Was a customer for a long time until yesterday when my dog had 2 strokes back to back. My dog was 16 years old and after he had them he was suffering. My family went into the store to put him to sleep and to stop his suffering they told my family after already taking it very hard to call tomorrow and make a appointment. One of the workers seen my dog not doing well going in circles falling down crying and asked the Dr and was told by this Dr that has no care for anyone having a hard time almost in tears to make a appointment. We will never go back in this place. Went to Med Veterinary and was treated like family during this hard time. They even said that we should have not been turned away like we did earlier because of the dog suffering. Please go to Med Veterinary you will be so happy.

This place will push rubbish insurance that pays for nothing when you need it and when you cancel they don't really do it and keep pulling funds. Changed card numbers to get it to stop then they sent it to collections? To top it off they won't stop calling to schedule my dogs next appointment as if I would ever go back. Try worrying about the pets in your care and their owners more than pushing this garbage and harassing former customers. My advise is to find a real vet if you need help with your fur baby!

Over the course of the incredibly stressful experience of trying to get our dog prepared for an overseas move while we already had to be overseas ourselves, this Banfield location managed to make mistake after mistake at every turn. After setting up a key appointment, calling to confirm that appointment a week later, then confirming the appointment a 2nd time the night before the appointment with all details and needs, the people caring for our dog arrived for the appointment to be told the appointment had never been confirmed and they didn't have any of the required treatments onsite. At another appointment, they administered the incorrect treatment which may ultimately result in our dog having to be quarantined and kept away from us for weeks longer than he should be. Incredibly frustrated and let down by this location for causing potentially catastrophic mistakes in the process of getting our dog to us.
