How to Save Money at Oak Ridge Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot say enough about this clinic & their staff! My last vet clinic in The Woodlands was price gouging but yet negotiating bills when questioned, had a Dr on staff that was quick to send you off for more expensive procedures without ruling everything out. I stayed because I loved our Dr. With our new puppy I moved over to Oak Ridge & they have been amazing & not breaking the bank. They are very attentive, thorough & loving. I highly recommend to all!

I used to take my lab here before he passed, now I take my cats here. It’s obvious they care about your animals, one of our cats had cancer and didn’t have much time left and went above and beyond on helping us keep her comfortable in her last few days. We were absolutely distraught and they handled both our cat and us with such grace and compassion.

I recently switched over to Oak Ridge from another vet and I’m beyond grateful I did. The first time I came in with my puppy, he was experiencing some serious heath concerns and Dr. Corona was so thorough. He is doing amazing now! The second time I came in, Dr. Vernon immediately noticed a giant gash that was hiding in the fold of my other dog’s next. I had a traumatic experience with a Rover app boarder. My dog was viciously attacked and the Rover host did not notify me of the extent of the injuries. She had SUPER GLUED the quarter size gash together that morning. Needless to say, Dr. Vernon immediately went into surgery with my fur baby and took excellent care of him. From their front office staff to veterinarians, this is an ALL STAR team. I am so grateful for them!!! They have new loyal clients in us.

I’m am a bit disappointed in my experience with oak ridge after so many raving recommendations. I do believe the vet and vet techs cared for my dog. They spent a lot of time with him and with me. My dog had an upset stomach for a week (also puked once) had an estimated ~$700 bill. Fecal AND bloodwork was double my regular vet (because I just went back to my normal vet today). They said he seemed hydrated (when pulling up gently on his skin), but then included things for dehydration, shots lasting only 24 hours and more pills for nausea. Unfortunately, it has become more about making money than actually targeting the issues without over prescribing medications / injections. As I was leaving the receptionist asked if I would like a receipt, which I had declined. I walked in a few moments later because I realized with all the price adjustments I should see the line items. The receptionist had such an unnecessarily rude attitude as well saying, “per our prior conversation you declined the receipt…”. I understand and respect it was past their closing time they took a long time to it’s my dog in the back (which I appreciated). However, when you are stressed out, making decisions on the best thing for your dog, a ton of things in my hand I do not feel like a customer should be talked to that way like I was a burden to print out a receipt… Edit to add almost a week has gone by no one has called to check in on how he was doing nor responded to my survey I completed that asked if I wanted a call back about my experience (I said yes). Based on the owners response I have received a call, but I have not. I have also not received a voicemail either.

Groomer and staff are rude. Refused to groom my pets because my 8 lb Yorkie bit her 2 plus years ago (I was never told this) but they made an appointment to groom her. Tracey, the groomer, has never groomed my other pet so not sure why she refused her. Her comment in the waiting room in front of other clients was”let me make this known today I refused to groom your pets because “they” bite!” The front desk told me they didn’t have time to do it but again made the appointment! Needless to say, now I understand why other family members have left this practice after 20 plus years. I will say the doctors are awesome especially Kevin. Sorry to say this family will not be back. Time to move on!!
