How to Save Money at Marshall Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My husband and I moved to the area recently and made a new patient appointment for our two dogs to establish care. We had our appointment and went about our life. When it came time to refill our dogs’ medications, they told us they would not give us a prescription since they did not have a heart worm test on file. I was baffled at this response since it hadn’t been long since their appointment. In short, they basically treated our new patient appointment as a meet and greet. Meaning we basically got charged to get to know each other… They didn’t run any tests to get a baseline on two new dogs that would be in their care moving forward. This was extremely frustrating since we planned the appointment ahead of time to work with our work schedules. We now had to make an additional appointment (and get charged twice for the visit) for something they should have done in the first place. The incompetence was so frustrating that we decided to take our pups somewhere else.

The facility is very clean. The staff is very good and thorough with making you feel comfortable. The welcome process is a great way to be to know staff.

Dr. Wehr, Krissie, and the rest of the team are caring, supportive, and very upfront. They have taken excellent care of all our dogs and given realistic and practical advice for treatment. You won't find a more honest and caring place for your animals.

UPDATE: All things can change. We visited Marshall and our GSD hurt his foot. MAH got him in the same day, we got to see Dr. Wehr and her team and had exceptional care. She diagnosed him with a broken toe, got him the meds he needed and we went on our way. This morning, they texted me to see how he was doing. Talk about a turn-around. Thanks team! Kraken appreciates it. PREVIOUS: I’m sad to say I will not be returning to Marshall Animal Hospital. My favorite vet (Wellington) moved there and I really tried but their front desk/reception woman is so rude and overall the care is lacking. My first visit was an emergency visit where I was immediately informed that there was a service fee for lack of an appointment. I was so worried about my dog that I just ignored her utter lack of empathy and paid it. When I boarded my dogs there, our dog got kennel sick with what I suspected was kennel cough. I was told by the person who answered the call that I couldn’t get him to be seen until the following week. When I told her I suspected kennel cough, she stated it couldn’t be because he was vaccinated during his boarding. I told her it was possible as vaccines are not immediately effective and she told me I was wrong. I asked to speak with my vet and she stated I could not. Over the next 24 hours, his condition worsened significantly. We took him to another vet out of the area and confirmed kennel cough, confirmed vaccines could take a week or more to become effective, and had we waited until the following week, he may not have survived. I called back to let them know it was a confirmed case of kennel cough and the same person told me he must have gotten it somewhere else! We have moved out of the area but we would not go back had we stayed. It makes me so sad because Doc Darlene and Amy have always been so kind.

These people are angels. They are very genuinely compassionate. I will never forget how they helped the dogs I brought to them.
