How to Save Money at Kilgore Veterinary Associates

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had to put my ancient dog down because she was not comfortable, maybe cancer? The very and his assistants were helpful, comforting and respectful of what transpired. I was well pleased with the professionalism that they had there. They come highly recommended!

This is the most disrespectful clinic I have ever been to. I have worked in vet clinics across Texas for over 8years and have a very good understanding of how clinics function and how all of the billing works. My husband asked me to use this clinic for our animals when we got married and I have given it two goes. Once with my cat and another with my puppy. BOTH times I had the same experience. In both instances I called ahead to make my appointment and specified what my animals needed and verified the cost. Both times when my animal was in the exam room I immediately knew that the technicians and doctors were literally doing whatever they wanted, completely disregarding what I agreed to over the phone. The whole appointment, both the doctors and technicians, unknowing of my background in animal medicine and practice development, were trying to sneak various things into the appointment to simply gain more money. I had to tell people NO many times in the middle of them trying to force various things onto my animals that I did not agree to just because of this reason. Anyone in the general public would not think or see their actions to tell them no. My visits that I had agreed to and double verified cost of being $35 for one and $65 for the other (even with me catching them trying to add stuff on in the appointments) turned into a $70 and $250 visit. Then when you try to talk to the receptionist about why what was agreed to while scheduling the appointment was not directly communicated to their staff they have no answer but “I’m sorry this is what it is”. This is NOT the way any respectable vet clinic is run. It is absolutely rude and disrespectful to every client they have. I would not recommend this clinic to ANYONE unless you want your animals to have various things done to them that they don’t need and you didn’t ask for and then being charged for the nonsense afterwards. My husband and I will NOT be going back to this clinic with any of our animals.

Problem was I had appointments in the past 4 or 5 appointments. And you wait for hours and hours to get to see the 1 doctor that's always in surgery. 2 times I walked out after over 2 hours waiting past my appointment times. Can't go back because what they say and what happens are 2 different things.

They took good care of my dog and were very kind to her. However it was my first time bringing an animal to the vet and they made me feel kind of stupid for not knowing how the appointment should go. And then when I was trying to check out the receptionist completely ignored me until I asked if I needed to check out and all she said was that we had to wait on my dog’s chart and went back to ignoring me. I just wish they’d explained things a little more.

We have been using Kilgore Vet Associates since probably 2006 or 2007. Dr. Pittman and Dr. Thoni has always taken amazing care of our animals. We currently have 4 seniors, and we are so thankful to have them taking care of our 4-legged family! Dr. Pittman always takes the time to listen to us and values our knowledge about our animals. He allows us to be part of the team in our animals' care. That is important to us. Editing my review to add that Dr. Brunson has joined the KVA team, and she has helped me navigate my 13.5yr old cocker spaniel's heart disease. She is wonderful with him, and he loves seeing her. We are so thankful to have this group of veterinarians as part of our health care team for our animals.
