How to Save Money at Town and Country Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our little chihuahua/terrier mix developed an infection on the side of his face and neck. Dr. Black and his staff got him in the same day even though we were a new patient. ALL the staff were so kind and the office is beautiful. We will return with our other three pets!

I came to Town & Country after moving from out of state, hoping to find a good vet for my older dog. While the vet, Taylor, was kind and professional, I won’t be returning due to several concerns. When the staff insisted on using their thin leash, that literally gagged her, to take her out of the room instead of examining her with me present, my dog panicked. I stood by my dog to help her know she’s safe and to help the staff. Their response of just staring at me and not showing me where they needed my dog felt judgmental as if I was a problem by keeping my dog calm. Communication about what was happening and why she was being taken away was nonexistent. I had to ask after they brought her back. Costs were not explained clearly beforehand, and their paperwork makes it clear they require full payment at the time of service with no flexibility, which gave the impression that money mattered more than care. The biggest issue was follow-through. They promised heartworm results within 30 minutes, but I never received a call and only got an email more than 24 hours later solely about heart worm results. They also said I would receive a surgery estimate within 24 hours, yet more than five days later I still haven’t heard back. For a dog with potentially serious health issues, this lack of communication is unacceptable. The only positive part of the visit was Dr. Taylor herself, who was straightforward and professional. Unfortunately, the overall experience left me with no confidence in the clinic’s care or reliability.

The staff and service at Town & Country Animal Hospital has always blown us away. They have been our trusted Vets for many years, and guided us very tenderly in recently laying to rest our long time family dog (Mac, golden retriever of almost 15 years) - Making the right decisions about your pets can sometimes feel very difficult but Dr. Beau and Dr. Elizabeth Black have always made us feel confident in our treatment decisions and been educational and compassionate every step of the way. The hospital is in amazing condition, the staff friendly, service smooth and after having the experience of putting my beloved dog to sleep, I just had to write a review. I am just so very grateful for the doctors care for us and comfort and attention given to Mac. I can't thank them enough for how smooth and peaceful Mac's passing went and how skilled they are both in medicine and sincere genuine care for the pets (and owners). Thank you for your all your words of encouragement, comfort and advice. We will always continue to use Town & Country for our animals needs and mostly highly recommend them to anyone in the greater Denton area for their small and large pets. We have now been through the whole circle of life from brining in a puppy, wellness, sick visits, now - to the end of senior care. We've dealt with pet emergencies (last year - that had great outcomes) - and can confidently say that they are the best health partner to choose for your loved and cherished pets.

This is a truly wonderful veterinary team. Even when going through the process of saying goodbye to our beloved dog Sunny Dr. Black treated her in her final moments with a level of respect and care I have never seen from another veterinary practice, what in the past has been a cold calloused process he handled with a warmth and respect I will never forget.
