How to Save Money at Animal Medical & Surgical Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would highly recommend Dr. Read and his staff. I've brought my dogs here for many years, two have passed on and my current dog. Dr. Read provided a reliable referral for my English Mastiff, Tank when he needed it and saved him. In the past I have boarded my dogs there, they provide excellent care. As well as grooming. Now I live out of the area and still bring my dog in for routine care. Truely true the care from Dr. Read's team.

If you want your pet to live, do not bring them here! The worse experience ever. My husband brought our injured dog here on 5.13.25 bleeding badly. He just panicked and went to the closet vet, and not our normal place. Very bad mistake. The first thing they were worried about was a payment and paperwork. Wouldn’t even look at her until that was handled. They ended up performing surgery on her. They never called us to give us an update. I had to call and check myself to see if she was out of surgery and how everything went. She stayed overnight, and they sent a text that she was ready to be picked up on 5.14.25 which in my opinion was very impersonal. We asked when we should bring her back for a follow up since her jaw was wired. We were told they didn’t know and would have to check with the Dr. Never received that information. Long story short, we had to rush our dog to a 24 hr veterinarian on 5.17.25 where she ended up having to be put down because there was nothing that could be done to save her. Our hearts are broken, and there’s an emptiness without our sweet Koko. After that major surgery they should have kept her there I feel for a few days. When my husband called after it was all over to tell them what happened, they had no remorse and acted like it was a money issue and we couldn’t afford care for our pet. We paid them over $1500 in the beginning so obviously we could afford it. We were shocked that it was so much but would have paid what we needed for her care. And to add, she still had blood all over her when we picked her up. The lady said they tried to clean her up. I highly doubt it! Special shout out to the Neighborhood Veterinary Center in Nederland. They have an awesome team. Go there, not here! If I could give a zero, I would!

So very thankful for Dr. Read and his staff!! After visiting two different vets, not feeling heard, given false information and charged an arm and a leg for no results! (Even lead me to thinking my baby needed to be put down) I was referred to Dr. Read by my grandmother and he gave me all the hope in the world and was/is able to heal my sweet Shih Tzu without even needing surgery! He knows his work and he actually cares about your pets! My experience has been great and I wanted to give a public thank you!!

Dr Read and his staff have been caring for my animals for many, many years. They have always went the extra mile to make sure they are happy and comfortable. My cat Booger lived 21 happy years and my dog Shiloh a blue healer is a spunky 12, thanks to the compassion and caring of Dr Read. I can't imagine trusting any other Doctor with the care of my babies.
