How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Great experience. They did a great job on my poodle son’s surgery. You can’t even tell it ever happened. This is the best location I have been too. I prefer to drive almost an hour extra to come here, then go to another closer location and get no care. Thank you for everything you do, you are making lives better and it is very much appreciated.

Dr. Hayes and Jessica are truly wonderful people. The entire team is amazing and genuinely cares. Petco made an excellent choice, and it’s clear to me that both Petco and Vetco share that same commitment to compassion and quality care. Thank you all for everything you do for us.

Absolutely Amazing Care at Vetco Bastrop I cannot recommend Vetco in Bastrop highly enough! I recently brought in my Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix for severe skin irritation, and it turned out to be fleas and flea allergies. From the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel completely at ease. Dr. Jennifer Hayes was incredible—professional, compassionate, and so easy to understand. She thoroughly explained the diagnosis and treatment options, answering every question I had without making me feel rushed or judged. What truly stood out was their transparency and kindness. Before starting any treatment, they provided a clear price quote to ensure I was comfortable with the costs, which I really appreciated. I even arrived a few minutes late (thanks to misplaced car keys!), and they were still so accommodating. I was so impressed with their care that I brought in my senior cat THE SAME DAY as well. I had been feeling guilty about not addressing her issues sooner, but the team didn’t make me feel judged at all. Instead, they educated me about her ear health and gave me valuable insights I didn’t even know I needed on top of what i brought her in for . They treated her like she was their own pet, and it was such a relief to know she was in good hands. Thanks to their amazing care, both my dog and my senior cat are now on medications and flea prevention, and they’re already improving. The entire experience was smooth, supportive, and educational. If you’re looking for a vet who truly cares about your pets and your situation, this is the place to go. Thank you, Dr. Hayes and the Vetco team, for going above and beyond!

First time going to Vetco, and I have mixed feelings about my experience. I took my kitty because I needed a same day appointment, and they are incredible about getting you in quick and same day. They give you an estimate of how much the process will cost, and they gave me mine. Beforehand I asked them to please give my kitty the 2 booster shots she needed if possible, they asked our Dr and told us she said both boosters would be given, so they were included in the estimate we were given. The process was quick, I was able to pick my kitty up in 2 hours. Once I paid the price was more than the estimate I had been given, which wasn't a big deal since I knew there would be taxes, etc. I was in a hurry to get my kitty home since she hates being in a carrier, so I paid and left. Once I was checking the receipt they gave me, it looked like a grocery store receipt and a lot of it wasn't clear about what I had actually paid for. I didn't see a charge for any booster vaccines, so I decided to call in. Their website said they were still open but no one answered so I left a voice message to be called back asking if my cat had been given both boosters shots or not and asked if a clear receipt of my charges could be sent to my email. The next morning I was at work while they called me, so I ended up missing their call, but they did send me an invoice that broke down what I was charged for. I called them back while at work and was not able to get the information I was looking for due to the kind lady who had my cat's records not being available at that moment. I was asked if I wanted to be called back and I said yes multiple times, but I did not receive a call back. Due to it being a holiday weekend I had to wait until Wednesday to call them, or even attempt to. On Monday I received a text message checking in on my cat and asking how she was doing, which was very appreciated and sets them apart from a lot of other vet services to me. I let them know she was doing a lot better and healing nicely, and they let me know they would call me when my test results arrived. I received a call this morning from the Dr who saw our cat, and we got our cats test results back, so I had my opportunity to ask if my cat had been given both boosters I had asked for, to which the doctor said "the Leukemia booster was declined" yet I was not made aware of that at any point in time. Now I have to re-vaccinate my cat against leukemia and wait to get her booster since the allowed booster period has passed, due to me thinking it has been given to her because they had told me it would be administered. Everyone was very kind and helpful, my only issue was not as much transparency and honesty of service was provided, in my opinion. This is not a bad vet clinic by any means, just please be sure to ask about charges and be your own advocate for transparency.
