How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Do not go here if you don’t care if they don’t listen to your pet’s health issues. I’m really disappointed with how this clinic has handled my pet’s care. Every visit feels rushed, and it’s clear the staff is stretched thin. I understand the vet is likely overworked and underpaid, but basic communication and follow-through shouldn’t be optional. I called once for my cat’s UTI results. First they told me there were no crystals, then after checking again, suddenly there were “microscopic crystals.” That shift doesn’t inspire confidence and makes me feel like the results weren’t reviewed carefully the first time. They also performed an ultrasound while I was there, and no one explained the findings afterward. I had to follow up myself and ask if anything showed up in the ultrasound. They actually had to “check and see,” which tells me they forgot to review it altogether. That should never happen. Communicating results is the most basic part of their job, and the lack of care is obvious. The exam itself lasted under five minutes, and the vet walked out before I could ask my questions. After the visit, my pet developed sneezing and congestion, and when I called, they told me I’d have to come back and pay for another exam. It left me feeling like the priority here is money, not care. I’m still waiting for a callback from the vet, which says a lot. If you truly care about your pet, I wouldn’t recommend coming here. Corporate should be embarrassed by how little support and attention they’re giving to both their staff and their patients.

We took Poppy, our 5 month old kitten to this vet. They treated her so well and gave us sound advice. Dr. Chan and the other people that work here truly care about your babies so I would highly recommend them. They even gave her some delicious treats to make her visit more enjoyable:) The exam for her was $90 which is very affordable for me which I appreciate.

My kitty Joy had many teeth removed here at the Hancock location a couple of weeks ago. The care she (and I as her worried cat mom) received were 5-star. Thank you to everyone here at this location—you all are much appreciated. Dr. Chan, Elise, Cardella, and Patrick—you all rock! Heading back in a few more weeks to get the rest pulled.

I want to share my fantastic experience at Vetco at Petco, which has been a blessing for my cat, Sonja, who struggles with asthma. Finding a prescription inhaler has been challenging, especially since other clinics charged upwards of $300, leading me to rely on steroids that were often frustrating to manage. Now, thanks to Dr. Chan, I don’t have to worry about that anymore. When I visited, I was initially disappointed they were fully booked, but Patrick at the front desk kindly fit me in. Vet tech Elise was incredibly kind, helping Sonja feel at ease. Dr. Chan provided me with a prescription and recommended the AeroKat inhaler, which I’ll be ordering. She explained that I could start using it right away and administer it 2 to 3 times daily during asthma attacks. I was pleasantly surprised with a free coupon for the first visit, which I truly appreciated. Thanks to the team, Sonja now has an affordable inhaler, and Dr. Chan's compassionate care eased my worries about her health. I highly recommend Vetco at Petco and especially Dr. Chan. Thank you to everyone there for your incredible support!

Don’t be wary of the Petco label. They purchased a beloved local vet clinic named Abraham Veterinary Clinic with Dr. Chan. Dr. Chan is the most caring, warm, and direct vet I have ever had. She offers really helpful information so you can feel empowered to make informed decisions about your own pets’ health. The administrators here are also so wonderful and patient. I had had issues with the past staff here— they were often disorganized and did not communicate well, which was frustrating and made me feel like I was completely alone. But I finally feel like I have support in caring for my dog.
