How to Save Money at VEG ER for Pets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my cat baby (Olivia) to the emergency vet last night, and I can honestly say this experience exceeded every expectation. I’m usually *very* particular about where I take my girls, so I don’t give five stars lightly — but this place absolutely deserves them. From the moment we walked in, every single person we interacted with was kind, caring, and genuinely warm. You could feel how much they truly love animals, and that immediately put me at ease during what could have been a really stressful night. Dr. Kiefer was, without a doubt, the best doctor I’ve ever interacted with. I felt completely confident in his knowledge and abilities, and he treated Olivia with so much love and gentleness. On top of that, he has such a fun, positive personality — he actually had me smiling and laughing, which completely shifted the energy of the whole experience. What started as a moderately stressful situation turned into something that felt supportive, calm, and even uplifting. That made such a difference because it helped me stay positive and present for my cat while she was having issues. I’m incredibly grateful for the care, compassion, and professionalism we received. Thank you for taking such amazing care of my gal.

Super caring team. They treated my timid girl so well, she got comfortable quickly and wasn't nearly as terrified as I expected. Everyone reassured me and explained every process to me in simple terms, and I even got some fun facts about kitten anatomy! I called after with a care question and they gave me helpful ideas and reassured me again. I was also speedily refunded for the items/procedures that didn't end up happening. Got pretty busy around the middle of the day, but I think it's really worth a visit. The team is so trustworthy, gentle, and enthusiastic about vet care.

Absolutely blown away with the care me and my dog received here over the past 2 days. Came here as a referral from a different provider and ended up hospitalizing my dog overnight. The staff, especially Dr. Jemmott were patient, kind and thorough. They answered all my questions and made me feel like I understood a really stressful and scary situation with my dog who had fluid in his lungs. Despite being an emergency vet, it was an extremely calm environment which was so helpful to me and my dog as well. I overheard some of the convos with other pets and the bedside manner was compassionate, patient and really tried to educate all owners. She sent me texts throughout the night with updates which put me at ease. The open door policy is incredible. The next day I was able to visit my pup with a different doctor, Dr. Imma on call. She was similarly kind, patient and thorough with all her explanations, updates and answers to my questions. When I left temporarily to run some errands, she let me know my dog was distressed and asked me to come back if possible to help him calm down. I really appreciated the team’s attentiveness to my dog’s behavior. I ended up having to come back one more time for a symptom check back with Dr. Jemmott whose calm demeanor and reassurance put my mind at ease. I cannot recommend VEG ER enough. They will be my go-to from now on!!!

I will never forget Dr. Dane. Our dog had been kicked by a horse, his jaw broken, the situation terrifying and urgent. I was out of town, shaken, helpless, trying to make impossible decisions from afar. Dr. Dane was someone I had never met before, recommended to us in an emergency, and yet she showed up as if she had known us and our dog for years. She stayed hours past when she was supposed to leave, nearly three hours, without rushing us once. She sat with us. She explained and re-explained every option with patience and clarity, never making us feel slow, overwhelmed, or foolish for needing things said again. She spent hours on the phone tracking down the right surgeon for emergency dental surgery, advocating tirelessly for our boy as if he were her own. This was a foster-to-adopt situation, which made ownership complicated and paperwork messy. Dr. Dane didn’t flinch. She worked with us through every layer of complexity, never treating us like a burden or an inconvenience. She met us where we were, emotionally, logistically, financially. What moved me most was her integrity. She went out of her way to minimize emergency vet fees wherever possible, while also being clear and straightforward on what he needed, so that our limited funds could go toward the orthopedic surgery our dog would need next. That kind of care, the kind that considers the whole picture, not just the moment, feels rare. In one of the most difficult, frightening moments of my life as a pet parent, Dr. Dane was steady, kind, brilliant, and deeply human. Her compassion changed the entire experience for us. I am profoundly grateful for her time, her expertise, and her heart. If you ever find yourself in an emergency and see Dr. Dane’s name, know this: you and your animal are in the hands of someone who goes far beyond what is required. Someone who stays. Someone who cares. Thank you will never feel like enough, but it is offered with my whole heart.
