How to Save Money at VCA Tanglewood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Clean facility, great communication. The staff listen and ensure you're a part of your pet's care by making an estimate for services and allowing you the ability to choose what to do. They're a little higher on the price side of things ( corporate, right?) But they're worth it! Carol is a great hospital manager!

Dr. Travis is a very disorganized and unreliable vet, I would not recommend her for any serious, ongoing care. My dog was diagnosed with diabetes this year and the care has been all over the place from the beginning. I was told my dog would need a blood-sugar monitor, that had a 2-week span in which Dr. Travis would be monitoring daily. 1 week into the readings, I call with an issue regarding the monitor, and am told Dr. Travis is out of town and won’t be back for the next 8 days, and no one else had access to the monitor’s reporting. The helpful staff ended up being able to gain access to the reports, but I was left wondering why Dr. Travis would not suggest instead putting the monitor on when she returned, or at least grant access to another staff member before departing. Throughout the course of months, their record keeping of his insulin dosages as been consistently inaccurate. Including them making recommendations based on inaccurate records which would have been potentially dangerous if I has not questioned it. Finally, this week they requested a urinalysis which I dropped off Monday. I did not hear anything all week, and called Friday to inquire. I was told that 1 part of the test showed “something” but the receptionist could not tell the details, and the 2nd part of the test was not complete. I kindly asked if Dr. Travis could call me to explain what “something” means, as that’s an unsettling thing to hear. The day came and went, no call. And now Dr. Travis is gone for the weekend. I will be switching vets once the pricy urinalysis is complete. Feeling very let down.

This place is amazing! It is very clean, not a stressful environment for pets, just gave me a warm welcoming feeling and my baby felt that too. Dr. Robin took care of my pup with such care and the staff are just so wonderful and super friendly. If I ever need to take my pup in for a check up, this is where I will be going!

Heartfelt Review I recently had to take my cat, Patches, to the vet, and I can’t express how grateful I am for the kindness and support shown to both of us during such a stressful time. As someone who experiences autism and struggles with emotional regulation, the situation was overwhelming for me—especially seeing my precious kitty in so much pain. It was heart-wrenching. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond. They immediately took us back to the room, and it was such a relief to let her out of her cage and sit on the floor with her, offering her comfort in her moment of need. When the vet tech and the veterinarian entered the room, I was deeply touched by their approach. Instead of insisting that I pick my cat up and place her on the table—a task that felt impossible in that moment—they thoughtfully joined me on the floor. They folded the examination table against the wall, creating a safe and cozy space for us. This simple yet profound gesture made all the difference. It felt as if they were saying, “We’re here with you; you’re not alone in this.” Their compassion and willingness to adapt so quickly truly showcased their dedication to both their patients and their human companions. I felt supported, allowing me to focus on my kitty’s needs without the added stress of navigating a traditional vet visit. I am incredibly thankful to the team for their exceptional care and empathy. They turned a painful experience into one where I felt comforted and supported. I wholeheartedly recommend their services to anyone looking for a veterinary office that genuinely cares about both animals and their humans. Thank you for everything!

Max has been seeing Dr. Chapman since he was eight weeks old. At nine weeks, Max had a stroke which paralyzed his rear right leg. He's eight months now. It's been a rough time, but Max is so much better and actively healthy now. The VCA staff have always been great; friendly and professional. We are seen within a few minutes of the appointment time and most staff recognize Max when we walk in. We joined the Pet club and it has been well worth the cost. If you know you are going to be seeing the Dr. a lot, I highly recommend joining. We are using the kenneling service now as well. Cost efficient, a personal kennel, daily exercise and grooming for a reasonable cost. Plus knowing Dr. Chapman and Max's records are right there if needed. I highly recommend VCA Tangelwood to anyone and often do when talking to other pet owners. Thanks for all you've done for Max.
