How to Save on Veterinary Costs at VCA Capital Area Veterinary Specialists
Preventive care
Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.
Compare prescription pricing
Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.
Consider pet insurance
Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Strottner, Dr Weinstein and the whole team at VCA. When my 8 y/o golden was diagnosed with an aggressive mammary cancer we were not given a lot of hope. I interviewed 3 oncologists and Dr Strottner was the third. She was the best one we interviewed, combining a scientific and rational mindset with empathy and bringing more options to the table than anyone else. We did a revision surgery with Dr. Weinstein who is unimaginably smart, precise and competent. We had yet another tumor a year later that was assumed to be spread but the team at VCA determined it might be another primary tumor. We operated again with Dr Weinstein and have been on oral chemo, which was a good option for her. My dog just celebrated her 10th birthday. It’s been now two years so far, and aside from the two weeks of downtime for the surgeries, she has been able to run, play and jump and act like her normal self. No one with a dog with cancer knows for sure how much time they will get, including us, and the treatments are expensive there is no doubt about that. But we cannot thank the team at VCA enough for the quality time we have gotten and hope to get much more with their precise and compassionate care.

Was very disappointed with my experience today. Left with no real true answers! The vibe here is hope you have at least 15-25k savings to save your pets life! They have a care credit card that interests rates are 24.9% absolutely absurd! Truly ridiculous with the pricing. I went back to my vet for a second opinion and they also agreed that cancer treatment plus surgery should not cost 17k. Dr. Strottner would not answer my questions and revert back to “well we just need to run tests to see”. We already know what the issue is! You can clearly see that my dog has two thyroid lumps in his throat. The only thing this place cares about is money and not saving your pet!! If you guys truly CARE you would set up a payment plan. Having a dog with cancer is already stressful enough! I will not be referring any of my friends or family to this place!

Cannot say enough about how good Dr Strottner and her team are at this facility. They treated my dog for a year with cancer . They were transparent , caring, reasonable, and very accessible to us when we had questions. Having a dog with cancer is very stressful but dealing with them was not a burden at all. We will be bringing any of our future pets here

VCA Capital is truly amazing and wow- what an incredible team. The Doctors, Nurses and Front desk staff go above and beyond for you. They are highly skilled, compassionate and genuinely care for your fur baby. My 14-year-old English Bulldog was diagnosed with an aggressive Bone Cancer-- Osteosarcoma-- in March 2024. VCA quickly scheduled and educated us about available treatment options. Dr. Weinstein (surgery), Dr. Treuil (radiation), Dr. Strottner ( chemotherapy) and their team are very experienced, responsive, patient and caring. We never felt pressured and answered our questions at all times. As of August 2024, my pup is pain free, alive, and very happy. She received CT scans, bone and spleen aspirates, radiation, a leg amputation and chemotherapy-- all back to back. She did well for all treatments, loved going in for treatments because of the treats/snuggles, and as of today-- has no signs of cancer!! While we understand the cancer may appear at a later date-- we are so thankful for the additional pain free, quality time with our best girl. Many thanks to the VCA Capital team for helping pet parents to find peace and comfort during such a difficult time. ❤️ UPDATE: My sweet girl passed away in November 2024 due to GI disease but she was cancer free. We are grateful to VCA Capital for giving us 11 extra incredible months with our best girl. She beat bone cancer, was a happy girl everyday, and was a princess warrior.

Dr. Treuil and his team provided us with the best care and service we have ever experienced in all of our dog owning years. From the initial consultation to the last radiation treatment, we were well informed and kept up to date on all the going ons with Trudy. All the staff at VCA did a fantastic job. We received text messages, photos ad videos through the whole process. Trudy needed to stay a few nights throughout the three weeks of treatment and we never once worried about her. Thank you to THE WHOLE ENTIRE team for making us feel comfortable knowing that you were taking the best care of our best girl! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
