How to Save Money at VCA Ben White Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I love the staff here. I can honestly say I’ve never met a group of people more genuine, more capable, or more devoted to animals. The techs treat my dog like he’s their own — not in a cliché way, but in the small ways that actually matter: gentle handling, calm voices, remembering his quirks, and always prioritizing safety. Dr. Yen, Dr. Joseph, Dr. Nauert, and Dr. B are hands-down some of the best vets in Austin. They’re knowledgeable, thorough, and they truly listen. Every time one of my dogs has been sick, I’ve been met with honesty, compassion, and a level of integrity that’s rare in any field. I’m a tough critic when it comes to my pets’ care, and this is the only place where I’ve felt completely at ease. If you want a clinic where your pet will be genuinely loved, respected, and cared for by people who go above and beyond every single time, go to VCA Ben White. They’re the kind of humans who make the world better just by doing what they do.

I CANNOT praise these guys enough. I have an ~8 year old cat who recently got diabetes and a complex wound infection. Sounds expensive right? Their care club option has helped an insane amount and we were able to do an array of diagnostic work ups through it. He now has vet appointments roughly every 2 weeks while we stabilize his diabetes and I honestly have no idea what I would do without this place. Also worked with me on finding cheaper ways to acquire his medication and diabetic supplies as well as worked out cheaper alternatives for his prescription food. 100/10. Team wise, Dr Yen is phenomenal, but even when we’ve had to see other providers they picked up the care plan instantly and my cat genuinely likes the whole team (the treat bribes definitely helped) and you can tell he feels comfortable and he has a history of disliking vets. Took a nap on the weight scale while we waited last time. They make visits a complete walk in the park.

For seven years, VCA provided my dog with gentle care, support, treatment, and preventative care. Dr. Yen is truly a special person; she is knowledgeable, personable, and caring. I am so thankful for all her recommendations, her devotion to getting answers, and for always putting my dog’s comfort first. She is honest and exercises good judgment when navigating treatment options. She truly cares about each of her pet patients. We loved her so much that, even after moving this summer, we planned to return for routine examinations and vaccinations. Unfortunately, one week before our scheduled return to Austin, my dog unexpectedly crossed the rainbow bridge. The staff here are equally wonderful! Every time we walked in, they were friendly and accommodating. I’m sad to officially say goodbye to VCA. They have been like family for the last seven years.❤️ Thank you for all the love and care you provided to my sweet boy, Henley. 🐶

The Ben White VCA provided exceptional care for both of my elderly pups. Our primary care doctor was Dr. Yen. She really got to know Dexter and Diesel in such a short amount of time. She was committed to ensuring their quality of life was exceptional and did a great job diagnosing and treating their numerous ailments thoughtfully and compassionately. When Dr. Yen was not available, we saw Dr. Nauert, who recommended ketamine for Diesel and physical therapy for her hips. This combination has made a remarkable improvement in Diesel’s mobility! We will miss this special place. All of the staff are wonderful. On one of our last visits, we received a condolence card signed by their entire team to honor Dexter’s passing, along with a bandana for Diesel so she wouldn't feel left out. This kind gesture was unexpected, but it signified to me their genuine care for the patients and clients who come under their watchful care.

Staff here is very kind and understanding. This is the most comfortable I’ve ever seen my dog at the vet! Dr, B is awesome. They really want what’s best for my dog and I really appreciate everybody here taking care of my baby!
