How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Southwest Vet
Preventive care
Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.
Compare prescription pricing
Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.
Consider pet insurance
Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Compare Pet Insurance Plans
You can compare coverage options from multiple providers to find a plan that fits your budget and your pet’s healthcare needs.
Getting to Know Your Veterinarian
Choosing a veterinarian is an important decision for pet parents. A strong vet relationship is built on trust, communication, and understanding your pet’s individual needs.
Experience
Ask whether the clinic has experience treating your specific type of pet, since care can vary between dogs, cats, and pocket pets.
Emergency Care Procedures
It’s helpful to understand how the clinic handles after-hours emergencies, including whether they provide emergency services or refer to nearby emergency hospitals.
Communication Preferences
Ask how the clinic communicates with pet parents, including updates, test results, and follow up questions.
Breed Specific Health Considerations
Some breeds may be more prone to certain health conditions. Early awareness can help with prevention and early treatment.
Facility Tour
If available, touring the clinic can help you and your pet feel more comfortable before the first visit.
Final Note
Pet care decisions often involve both medical and financial considerations. Having access to trusted veterinary information alongside pet insurance comparisons can help pet parents feel more confident when planning for their pet’s health and wellbeing.

I've been coming here since 2018 for both my (now senior) cat and dog and it's truly the best. Every member of the staff is SO kind, friendly, helpful and amazing with my crazy little kids. I moved out of the area a few years ago but as long as I am anywhere near Austin, I will continue coming here. My pets have had a number of medical issues this year, and I always feel so confident and at ease with the care they get. The photo of my dog is less than 24 hours after getting a bunch of teeth removed, and my cat, well...just being my cat haha. Thank you SW vet we love you!!

The vet took a lot of time to get my new very fearful rescue dog comfortable. I have been going here with my other dogs for years and always a good experience. My dog Kaya had a small surgery recently involving removing a growth from her neck and it went really well. Good experiences always.

I took my 8 month old puppy here to get neutered, and the southwest vet team was fantastic! My pup absolutely loves the staff, and their services are affordable. This is a really welcoming and calming vet and they will be my go to forever!

I have been going here for 3 years. They have always been great with my dog and cat. This morning my daughter who just adopted her puppy from APA and had him neutered yesterday ripped out all of his stitches and was bleeding and opened the wound. We called them and they took him in right away. Dr Singleton was so awesome. He came out and sat in front of us and took the time to explain everything. He was so patient and caring. He wasn’t rushed and we felt like we were the only patients there. He called my daughter and gave her updates and the vet tech and receptionist were so genuinely invested and caring. I just forgot to get their names to give them a shout out as well. 100% and 20 out of 10 this is the best vet and they have an amazing staff.

Southwest Vet and its sister location in South Austin served our family well for years. Dr. Singleton diagnosed my 4 year old cat with a chronic condition and helped us navigate his care throughout his life. Then recently, at 16 years old, they helped me navigate end of life care for him and were extremely compassionate, and not out to nickel and dime you like so many other providers out there. They’re a wonderful team. Can’t recommend them enough.
